Why Claire Walks Out on Christmas Eve in Oh. What. Fun.?
Oh. What. Fun. begins with Claire preparing for Christmas, her favorite holiday, one she plans for throughout the entire year. She loves watching The Zazzy Tims Show, which is hosting a Holiday Mom Contest where children can submit applications for their mothers.
Hoping to be part of the contest, Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) sends the information to her kids, Channing, Taylor, and Sammy, but they overlook it. Soon, the whole family arrives. Channing with her husband Doug and kids, Taylor with her new girlfriend, and Sammy recovering from a breakup.

The family settles into the holiday, while Claire stays busy preparing dinner. She finally sits down when her husband, Nick, raises a toast. As Claire’s hopes rise, the toast turns out to be for Santa Claus, as he surprises his grandchildren, leaving Claire quietly disappointed.
Her mood worsens when she realizes the contest’s application period has closed. Still, she keeps her spirits up as Christmas Eve approaches. But things grow chaotic when Claire tries to buy a better gift for her neighbor, Jeanne, and goes shopping with Channing.
During the trip, Channing admits that she may not want to spend future Christmases at home, as she wants to try her own traditions. Claire brushes it off, focused on grabbing a gift, which she ends up taking from the store, intending to pay later, before losing it during a chase.
Back home and still unsure what to give Jeanne, Claire tosses some store-bought snacks into a paper bag and pretends she made them herself. In that short moment, the entire family leaves for the dance show Claire had planned, accidentally leaving her behind.
Claire returns to an empty house, calling out for anyone. After waiting alone and realizing no one is coming back, she gathers her things and leaves home.
Christmas Plans Collapse After Claire Disappears
After realising that Claire is not with them at the dance show, the whole family rushes back home, only to find the home empty in Oh. What. Fun. While the kids assume she’ll return eventually, Nick panics, realizing how helpless he is without her.
They try to salvage Christmas, with Channing attempting to cook dinner using Claire’s recipe. But tensions rise quickly. Taylor accuses Channing of being insecure because she’s becoming too much like their mom.

Channing fires back, calling out Taylor’s habit of bringing a new partner home every Christmas. Sammy joins in, blaming Channing for ruining the holiday. The argument escalates as Taylor and Channing both complain that Claire always babies Sammy.
Doug, Channing’s husband, tries to calm things down, but Taylor snaps at him, leading Doug to blurt out that she had another girl in her room earlier. This pushes Taylor’s girlfriend, Donna, to leave the table. Taylor admits the girl was just a friend and jewelry maker who was helping her plan a proposal, but Donna still walks out after admitting that she is not sure about their relationship.
Christmas Eve ends in frustration, with Nick saying they can’t do anything without Claire. Sammy storms out and heads to a bar, where he meets Jeanne’s daughter, Elizabeth. The two get drunk and dance together.
Meanwhile, Claire tries to find a motel room but ends up sharing with a delivery driver whose habits keep her awake. She eventually sleeps in her car, only for it to get towed. With no other option, Claire buys another car and decides to drive to California and head straight to The Zazzy Tims Show.
How Claire’s Family Makes Amends at the End?
After leaving the motel, Claire drives to The Zazzy Tims Show, where she sneaks inside and eventually finds herself onstage with the other contestants. When Zazzy Tims approaches her and asks how she ended up on the show, Claire explains that her kids ignored the contest application and then left her alone on Christmas Eve for the dance show.

Meanwhile, back home, the family wakes up to the same gloomy atmosphere, only to realize Sammy is now missing as well. Spotting his bike outside Jeanne’s house, they go to retrieve him. While there, both families see Claire on TV, having a full meltdown on The Zazzy Tims Show.
Though her moment is initially cut off, the clip goes viral overnight, leading the show to invite her back the next day. Claire is stunned when her entire family joins her onstage as a surprise.
She is still hurt, however, and not yet ready to forgive them. It’s only after Channing speaks to her privately, apologizing sincerely and promising to do better, that Claire softens. The family finally spends Christmas together.
Oh. What. Fun. ends with a time jump to the next Christmas, where the whole family is now on a ski trip, happily working together to prepare for the holiday. Sammy is dating Elizabeth, so Jeanne and her family have joined the celebration as well.
