How I Met Your Mother is one of the most popular sitcoms ever made, but it is now most remembered for its shocking ending. Star Cristin Milioti has spoken about the How I Met Your Mother finale before from a retrospective stance but recently commented again on reactions to her character’s fate in an interview. Already a successful musical theater star at the time, Milioti was introduced at the end of How I Met Your Mother season 8 as the titular mother, who up until that point was an anonymous figure in the narrative Ted (Josh Radnor) recounts to his children about the years before he met his wife.
During an interview with Variety, in which she also discussed her experiences as part of Black Mirror and The Penguin, Cristin Milioti reflected upon How I Met Your Mother, acknowledging why people were angry when it was revealed that her character was dead all along, while also defending the show’s writers to some degree. Check out her comments below:
Yeah, they didn’t like that. I think it’s indicative of people caring. It was nice, because I’m not in it that much. Certainly, people’s love for that character was a huge compliment, but that’s also a testament to what they set up. I also think finales are hard. I definitely understand why people were upset, but I also admire them for sticking to their original plan.
What This Means For How I Met Your Mother's Legacy
Cristin Milioti Is Very Professional, But It's Not Going To Change Anything For HIMYM
Militioi discusses How I Met Your Mother with a diplomatic approach to her accurate summary. Because she was only a regular for the last season, she is not as ingrained in the series as the rest of the main cast and has more of an outsider’s perspective on it all. She understands that fans’ anger came from a genuine place, as they were eager to see Ted meet the Mother and have everything resolved, and felt cheated when they realized the happy ending wouldn’t be what they thought. It ultimately showed that they cared.
Milioti is also right about the consistency of the show’s story; it is clear in retrospect that How I Met Your Mother was always supposed to be about Ted and Robin (Cobie Smulders) getting back together, and it might have felt incongruous at the end if this didn’t happen. That being said, Milioti’s polite support of both the fans’ feelings and the writers’ vision isn’t going to redeem the legacy of How I Met Your Mother at this point. It’s long been clear that it’s going down in history as having one of the most hated series finales of all time.
Our Take On Cristin Milioti's Comments On The HIMYM Finale
She Is Still One Of The Best Parts Of How I Met Your Mother
While the Mother was always a part of the show’s mythos, Militioi has a strange place in it all as a performer when she came into the series so late. And yet, her performance doubtlessly lives up to the enigmatic yet lovable vision of the Mother that audiences had been waiting for. It feels like she deserved a better finale when she played the character so well, which is at least part of why people are still asking her about it. Milioti’s career is only getting bigger, but she seems to look back on How I Met Your Mother as a singular, enlightening experience.
