This article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga.

From the Fishmen who live on the ocean floor to the Minks Tribe who live atop an ancient colossal elephant, One Piece offers a highly diverse world. Most of these races have been around for ages, but there are some new races that have been popping up all over the world. They are called the artificial races.

As the name suggests, these are man-made races. Some of them were born out of somebody’s Devil Fruit powers, while others are the result of some mad scientist’s experiments. There are quite a few artificial races out there in the world of One Piece, but some are arguably more powerful than others. Here’s a look at the strongest artificial races in One Piece, ranked based on their strength.

7 Zombies

The Funky Undead

  • Creator: Gecko Moria
  • Affiliation: Thriller Bark Pirates
  • First Appearance: Episode 339

One of the first and most notable artificial races that appeared in the story was the funky zombies from the Thriller Bark. These zombies were the brainchild of two people: the genius surgeon Doctor Hogback and Gecko Moria, the captain of the Thriller Bark Pirates and the former Seven Warlords of the Seas.

Doctor Hogback would mend and modify the dead bodies—enhancing the muscles and the bones and replacing any missing limbs and tissues with artificial materials—while Moria would use his Devil Fruit’s power to plant the shadows that he had stolen from living people into the dead bodies. The body provided the physical strength, while the shadow provided the personality, knowledge, and skills/techniques. That’s why the zombie made using the corpse of the legendary ancient giant “Oars” and the shadow of Monkey D. Luffy became an extremely powerful and a bit goofy zombie.

6 Homies

Objects with Souls

  • Creator: Big Mom
  • Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates
  • First Appearance: Episode 571

Similar to Moria, Big Mom can also bestow life to others, but if Moria is limited only to dead people, Big Mom can do so with anything. From trees to swords, Big Mom can use her Devil Fruit power to give a tiny part of her soul to any object.

The object that has received a part of Big Mom’s soul becomes sentient. They will develop consciousness and even personalities. Not only that, but becoming sentient also greatly boosts their strength. These strange creatures are called the Homies, and they mainly reside in Big Mom Pirates HQ: The Whole Cake Island.

5 Human-Animal Hybrids

Centaurs, Harpies, and Other Humans with Animal Bodies

  • Creator: Trafalgar Law & Dr. Vegapunk
  • Affiliation: Caesar Clown and Beast Pirates
  • First Appearance: Episode 586 | Episode 615

There are two instances of human-animal hybrids in One Piece. The first one was in Punk Hazard. These were Brownbeard, his pirate crews, and Caesar Clown’s assistant, Monet. Brownbeard and his crews have the lower bodies of different animals, such as horses, zebras, and even crocodiles. Monet, on the other hand, has her arms replaced with wings and her feet with bird feet with claws. The one who was responsible for performing such a feat was Trafalgar Law with the help of his Devil Fruit’s ability.

The second one was in the Wano Country. There was a division within the Beast Pirates that consisted of nothing but human-animal hybrids. They were called the Gifters. They possessed animal-like body parts because they consumed artificial Zoan Devil Fruits. There were not many of them because most people who ate those artificial Zoan Devil Fruits failed to obtain their powers and ended up as deranged soldiers who constantly smiled and laughed. That’s why the Gifters are a special part of Kaidou’s army.

4 Numbers

Mindless Artificial Giants

  • Creator: Unknown
  • Affiliation: The Beast Pirates
  • First Appearance: Episode 955

The Beast Pirates were obsessed with gathering and creating as many strong soldiers as they could. Apart from their experimentation with the artificial Zoan Devil Fruits, which resulted in the Gifters, they also had a group of artificial ancient giants called the “Numbers.”

The Numbers were originally the result of a gigantification experiment held on Punk Hazard. While they possessed the size and power similar to that of a true ancient giant, they pretty much lost their minds and their personalities. Nowadays, they were nothing more than simple-minded muscle heads who every order from Kaidou and destroyed their enemies without any hesitation.

3 Modified Humans

Heartless Superpowered-Mercenaries

  • Creator: Vinsmoke Judge
  • Affiliation: The Germa Kingdom
  • First Appearance: Episode 784

Hogback, Vegapunk, and Caesar Clown are known for their obsession with creating creatures who are stronger than regular humans. Not one to be bested, Vinsmoke Judge, the King of the Germa Kingdom and the leader of the legendary Germa 66, also did the same thing. He, too, experimented on creating a superior kind of human. What made him different was the fact that he experimented on his own children.

Vinsmoke Judge altered his children’s biology from conception through every stage of their development. The result was individuals who appeared human but possessed physical and mental abilities far beyond those of any ordinary person—or any other creature, for that matter. From their inability to feel fear or pain to their absurd strength and durability, Judge modified his children so extensively that they could be considered an entirely new species.

2 Seraphim

The Ultimate Super Soldiers

  • Creator: Dr. Vegapunk
  • Affiliation: Marines
  • First Appearance: Episode 1087

Dr. Vegapunk is one of the most, if not the most, influential scientists in One Piece history. Unfortunately, he worked mainly for the World Government. He made all sorts of weapons for the Marines, but the most famous one has to be the Seraphim. These living weapons that can be considered a new species made a lot of things obsolete, including the infamous Pacifistas and the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

In the simplest terms, the Seraphims are the clones of the Seven Warlords of the Sea who possess the combat skills of the originals. From Mihawk’s swordplay to Jinbe’s martial arts, the clones can perfectly replicate the skills of the originals. Not only that, but Vegapunk also gave them the perfected version of the artificial Devil Fruits, which allows the Seraphim to use the same Devil Fruit abilities as the originals. In a lot of ways, the Seraphims are the pinnacle of Dr. Vegapunk’s inventions.

1 Demons

Immortal And Bloodthirsty Beings

  • Creator: Imu
  • Affiliation: World Government
  • First Appearance: Chapter 1150

This one is the newest addition to One Piece‘s artificial races list. So, for those who are not up-to-date with the latest manga chapters, consider this a spoiler. Anyway, not long after the God’s Knights invaded the island of Elbaph, the Great Imu herself appeared and showcased some of her unique powers. One of those strange and yet-to-be-explained powers was the ability to forcefully form a contract with a target and then turn them into immortal demons. She used this strange power on Dorry and Brogy, the captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates, and some of their crews as well.

While it’s true that these newly made giants received an immortal body and a significant boost in strength, they also lost their sense of self and experienced a significant increase in aggression. But the worst of all is the fact that they have total obedience to their creator: the Great Imu. They won’t even hesitate to attack their own people when Imu orders them to. At the time of writing, it’s unclear whether this transformation can be reversed or if they’re destined to remain part of the artificial demon race forever.
