Dreams are one of the biggest themes in One Piece. One way in which this is expressed is the way that every member of the Straw Hat Pirates has a big dream that they’re working to make come true. After over 1,100 chapters, not one of the ten Straw Hats has accomplished their goals, which speaks to how lofty their ambitions are.
The Straw Hat Pirates are defined by their dreams, but some of their dreams will be much more difficult to achieve than others. Some of the Straw Hats have dreams on a global scale, while others are focused solely on self-improvement and personal fulfillment. And, as impossible-sounding as some of their dreams may sound, certain Straw Hats were born with inherent advantages that others with the same goals wouldn’t have, and some of them have an easier path in front of them than others would exclusively because they’re a member of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew.
10 Brook Doesn't Need to Actively Do Anything to Achieve His Dream
Brook Dreams of Reuniting with Laboon After He Completes His Voyage
Fittingly for the most irrelevant Straw Hat, Brook’s dream is the only one that doesn’t require him to do anything. All he wants out of life is to eventually reunite with Laboon, who he knows exactly where to find. The one caveat to this is that Brook doesn’t want to see Laboon until he’s completed his adventure in the New World.
There is nothing about Brook’s dream that necessitates that he travel with Luffy, or that he accomplish any great deeds. The New World is filled with powerful pirates who could potentially harm Brook, but he’s strong enough to defend himself, and he could easily avoid angering the wrong people during his voyage. But, since he is with Luffy, all he needs to do is sit back and wait for Luffy to become Pirate King before he can see Laboon again.
9 Zoro Has Already Nearly Achieved His Dream
Zoro Dreams of Becoming the World's Strongest Swordsman
The longer One Piece has gone on, the less meaningful Zoro achieving his dream has seemed. When he was a child, all he wanted was to achieve Kuina’s dream, and become the world’s greatest swordsman. This should be an immensely difficult task for Zoro but, given his innate potential and the way One Piece’s power system works, it’s easy to imagine him surpassing Dracule Mihawk by the end of the series.
Zoro has the ability to use all three types of Haki and, at only 21 years old, he’s already close to being the strongest swordsman. Being a swordsman in One Piece isn’t really about skill, but Haki, meaning willpower is all that really matters. Zoro also has no direct opposition to achieving his dream, and there are no other relevant characters in the series who are competing with him.
8 Usopp is His Own Worst Enemy When it Comes to Achieving His Dream
Usopp Dreams of Becoming a Brave Warrior of the Sea
There was a point during the pre-timeskip era where it felt like Usopp would be the first Straw Hat to achieve his dream. After the Enies Lobby, Thriller Park, and Sabaody Archipelago Sagas, Usopp may still have been weak, but he’d shredded his cowardice, and was truly starting to seem like the «brave warrior of the sea» that he longs to be. Like most of the Straw Hats, however, Usopp’s character suffered heavily post-timeskip, and he was set back to square one.
Usopp’s dream is the only one among the Straw Hats’ with a subjective endpoint. Usopp will be a «brave warrior of the sea» only when he sees himself as one. Even after everything he’s been through, though, Usopp still isn’t brave, and the status quo of the series is actively keeping him from becoming so.
7 Franky's Dream is Difficult, But Far From Impossible to Achieve
Franky Dreams of Building a Ship That Can Traverse the Entire Ocean
Franky’s dream is one that has absolutely nothing to do with being a pirate. The cola-powered cyborg is a shipwright, and his dream is simply to construct a ship that can circumnavigate the entire globe. Were he not so loyal to Luffy, and determined to help him become Pirate King, he might have the easiest path forward of any Straw Hat.
For anyone else, Franky’s dream would be immensely difficult to fulfill. Franky, however, has the benefit of being an unparalleled genius, and having received training from the greatest shipwrights in the world. If anyone can make a ship that can sail across every corner of the ocean, it’s Franky.
6 Luffy Was Born With Every Possible Advantage to Help Him Achieve His Dream
Luffy's Real Dream is Currently One of One Piece's Biggest Mysteries
For the longest time, fans believed Luffy’s dream was simply to become Pirate King, but the Wano Country Saga revealed this not to be the case. Whatever he’s really after, it involves shaking the foundations of the entire world. This would not be achievable for anyone else, but Luffy is privileged enough for this to not be much of an issue.
Luffy has every type of Haki. He’s the grandson of one of the strongest men to ever live, and the son of a man who is likely similarly powerful. He wields the power of the Sun God Nika, and he may or may not be the reincarnation of Joy Boy. The obstacles standing between Luffy and becoming Pirate King are vast, and there’s a reason no one has ever been able to claim Gol D. Roger’s title before him. But, because of how blessed he is by circumstance, he’s all but guaranteed to find the One Piece by the end of the series.
5 Nico Robin Would Never Be Able to Achieve Her Dream On Her Own
Robin Dreams of Uncovering the True History of the World
Nico Robin faces more opposition in achieving her dream than any other Straw Hat. Her goal is to uncover the true history of the world, which has long been covered up by Imu, The Five Elders, and the World Government. This is easier for Robin than it would be for most others because of her unique ability to read Poneglyphs, but she’s also had a target on her back since she was a little girl, and many Poneglyphs exist in hostile territory.
Robin is simultaneously the only person who can achieve her dream, and incapable of achieving her dream on her own. Without Luffy, she would already be dead several times over. But, because of how devoted Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat are to her, she has a relatively easy ride to getting where she needs to go.
4 Nami Will Not Be Able to Fulfill Her Dream by the Time Luffy Saves the World
Nami Dreams of Creating a Map of the Entire World
Of all the Straw Hats, Nami’s dream is the most time-consuming, while still existing within the realm of possibility. As the world’s greatest navigator, her goal is to chart a map of the entire world. Traveling with Luffy for protection definitely makes this easier, but Nami still isn’t even close to completing her map.
To date, Nami has charted much of the East Blue, and some of the Grand Line and New World. She still needs to travel across the rest of all three of these oceans, and chart the entirety of the North, South, and West Blues. Nami can feasibly achieve her dream, but it’ll take many more years than she’s sailed with Luffy so far.
3 Sanji's Dream Could Potentially Be Literally Impossible to Achieve
Sanji Dreams of Discovering the Mythical All Blue
Sanji’s dream has always been a little weird, and its difficulty is also odd to judge. His goal is to find the All Blue, a part of the ocean that may or may not even exist. If the All Blue is real, Sanji’s dream is one of the easier ones to achieve among the Straw Hats but, if it doesn’t, it will forever go unfulfilled.
Sanji has become one of the strongest pirates in the world, and he can safely traverse any sea on his own. If the All Blue is real, and he spent years endlessly searching for it, there are decent odds he could eventually stumble across it. At the same time, there are no clues to help Sanji find the All Blue, and there’s a very real chance it isn’t actually real.
2 Jinbei Will Still Have Endless Work Ahead of Him Even After The World Government is Toppled
Jinbei Dreams of Ending Discrimination Against Fish-Men
Of all the Straw Hats’ whose dreams are theoretically possible to achieve, Jinbei has it the hardest. The bearer of Fisher Tiger’s will, Jinbei seeks to create a world without discrimination against Fish-Men, and where humans and Fish-Men exist as equals. There’s a reason Fisher Tiger never achieved this goal, and it’s one that Jinbei would never have a prayer of completing without Luffy’s help.
For Jinbei’s dream to have any chance of being fulfilled, the World Government must first be toppled, as they actively perpetuate systemic racism against Fish-Men. This means defeating Imu, the Five Elders, the Holy Knights, and all the Admirals. Then, even once they’ve all been beaten, Jinbei will still need to spend decades doing everything he can to change things on an individual and social level.
1 Chopper Will Never Be Able to Achieve His Dream
Chopper Dreams of Becoming a Doctor Capable of Curing All Diseases
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the child among the Straw Hats is the only one with a wholly unrealistic dream. The Straw Hats’ doctor, Tony Tony Chopper, seeks to acquire the knowledge needed to cure any disease. This is just as unfeasible for Chopper to achieve as it would be for any doctor in the real world.
No doctor can cure every disease, and this includes Chopper. There are bound to be far more uncurable diseases in the world of One Piece than in the real world, where there are single diseases doctors have been seeking cures for decades. Chopper’s youth is his greatest advantage, as it means he has a long life of studying ahead of him, but this can only make so much of a difference.
