Original Night Court Actor Shares Emotional Reaction to Reboot Series Cancellation

The article includes spoilers for the Night Court Season 3 finale.

Despite ending its third season on a cliffhanger, Night Court will not see a fourth season as NBC recently canceled the reboot of the popular 1980s sitcom. One of the original Night Court stars, Marsha Warfield, who played Rosalind “Roz” Russell in the series from 1986 to 1992, took to the social media site Threads to express her thoughts on the reboot being canceled.

Warfield, who reprised her Roz role in the new series, stated via Threads, “I’m so sorry to hear this! To John Larroquette, I have enjoyed every moment of working with you, and if fates allow, let’s do it again sometime! To [Melissa Rauch] meeting you and watching you revive a cherished memory and give it new life has been inspirational. May you continue to dream and shine! [Lacretta], gurrll, don’t you ever stop being amazing! And to all the rest of the cast and crew old and new, y’all did the damned thing! I am so very grateful for you all! Onward!”

The Reboot Began in 2023

Night Court debuted on NBC in 2023 and starred Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, Lacretta as Donna “Gurgs” Gurganos, and John Larroquette, reprising his original Night Court role as Dan Fielding. The show just ended its third season on May 6, with a cliffhanger. Days later, per Deadline, NBC pulled the plug on the multi-camera comedy.

The end of the series comes with the end of any more Big Bang Theory reunions, as Night Court’s star, Rauch, was well-known for playing Bernadette, the wife of Simon Helberg’s Howard Wolowitz on the hit CBS sitcom. Night Court’s Season 3 finale would end up being the series finale, and saw Abby’s boyfriend Jake (Ryan Hansen) planning to propose. However, Helberg’s character, Spencer, came into play.

It was revealed in the finale that Spencer is Abby’s husband, which dealt a shock to everyone since her character regularly dated other characters in the show throughout the series. Unfortunately, the episode ended with “To be continued,” but NBC has since canceled the show.

Night Court Star Wanted a Fourth Season

Rauch, in an interview with TV Insider after the finale aired, said she was hopeful for a fourth season to be able to work with Helberg again. “It was just such a dream to get to do this with him. Since the show started, I’ve wanted to bring him onto the show, but I wanted to make sure that it was the perfect role for him,” she said.

Anticipating that the show would be renewed for a fourth season, Rauch said, “There will be some questions that we desperately want to answer in a Season 4 (after this finale), and we have a really spectacular game plan in place if that should happen. We really want (Night Court) to (continue) because I feel like there’s so many more stories to tell, and especially the story in this season finale. There’s a major story there that we want to continue to tell.”

Night Court streams on Peacock. The 1984 original Night Court is streaming on Prime Video.
