Outward 2 might not be ready for release just yet, but developer Nine Dots Studio has announced sign-ups for a playtest in December 2025.
Outward 2 is an upcoming survival action RPG that heavily prioritizes player planning. It’s the sequel to Outward, a game that earned cult classic status due to its brutal difficulty and lack of hand-holding, with players gleefully throwing themselves into its meat grinder.
Outward 2 is set to enter early access in Summer 2026, but fans will get the chance to experience it ahead of time. A new trailer on the Nine Dots Studio YouTube channel has announced an Outward 2 playtest from December 9–15, with players able to sign up on a special registration site.
Outward 2’s Playtest Sends Fans To Haboob

The Outward 2 playtest takes place in the Bellowgale region, which includes Haboob, one of the game’s starting cities. DualShockers recently had the chance to experience this section of the game during a preview event, where the brutal difficulty was on full display.
If the playtest is the same as the preview, then the player is swiftly kicked out of Haboob and must survive in the Bellowgale region, which is teeming with monsters and bandits, all waiting to slay the hero before they can even lace up their boots.
Those who have played the original Outward will know what to expect, as the sequel is just as demanding, with the protagonist needing to eat, drink, and sleep, while dropping their gear before a fight begins, if they don’t want their stamina bar to evaporate within seconds. Outward 2’s gameplay is basically the hardcore mode from the Fallout games, except it’s mandatory.
That being said, there’s a reason why the Outward series has earned a passionate fandom. With great challenge comes tremendous satisfaction, and exploring the brutal world of Outward 2 is rewarding for those willing to rise to the challenge.
