Overwatch is getting some of the biggest changes in its history as Blizzard Entertainment introduces the roadmap for 2026. The first and foremost change is that Overwatch 2 is officially just Overwatch again, marking the start of what Blizzard calls a new, story-driven era for the hero shooter.

Announced during a Spotlight event on February 4, this new overhaul to the game changes nearly every part of the game, from how stories are told to how heroes are designed, balanced, and released. Season 1 of this new chapter begins on February 10, 2026, but there’s a lot more coming. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

For the first time since the first game launched in 2016, Overwatch will tell a single, connected story across an entire year. The storyline for 2026 has been titled The Reign of Talon, and it kicks off with Season 1 on February 10, 2026. It will continue through six seasons before concluding later this year. A new Season 1 will then launch in 2027, starting the next major story arc.

The storyline centers on Talon’s rise to power under its new leader, Vendetta, following her violent overthrow of Doomfist in a newly released cinematic. Blizzard plans to tell this story through in-game events, map updates, motion comics, animated hero trailers, short stories, and voice lines, with a clear beginning, middle, and end before the season resets.

The first step of this new story system is the Conquest event, a five-week faction war launching with Season 1. We’ll have to choose a faction between Overwatch and Talon and do weekly, lore-driven missions that determine which side earns greater rewards. These include loot boxes, cosmetics, exclusive titles, and faction-themed Legendary Echo skins.

This new story direction also comes with big changes to the game. Blizzard is making sweeping changes to how the game looks, plays, and presents itself. Most notably, Overwatch 2 is officially going back to being called Overwatch. According to the development team, this change is meant to make it so that the game is one experience that focuses on an evolving story every year instead of a sequel.

The biggest gameplay changes are the five new heroes launching alongside Season 1, with five more scheduled to roll out one per season for the rest of 2026. The first round of characters is split between the Talon and Overwatch factions to add to the story.

On the side of Talon, the first character is Domina, who is a long-range, zone-controlling Tank tied to Vishkar Industries. The second is Emre, who is a fast DPS character with a shooter-focused kit, shaped by cybernetic enhancements and a fractured past. The third is Mizuki, a Support hero who has a hybrid damage-and-healing style.

On Overwatch’s side, Anran is as a fire-based Damage hero with a unique ultimate that can either revive her or destroy her enemies, and Jetpack Cat finally becomes playable as a mobile Support with permanent flight. Anran is already available through a Hero Trial that began on February 5, ahead of the full Season 1 launch.

Beyond new characters, Blizzard is reworking the game’s core structure by introducing sub-roles within Tank, Damage, and Support. Each sub-role comes with its own passive bonuses, such as reduced critical damage for Bruiser Tanks, wall-based enemy detection for Recon Damage heroes, or carried-over ultimate charge for Tactician Supports.

Season 1 also has a major UI and UX overhaul, the largest in the game’s history. Menus, hero galleries, lobbies, and social panels have all been redesigned, with a new 3D hero lobby and a centralized notification hub. We’re also getting quality-of-life changes such as a new Praise system that lets players commend teammates using hero voice lines, better audio controls in the lobby, and the return of post-match awards later this year.

On top of all that, Stadium mode is also getting faster pacing, a new Armory UI, and a new Hero Builder system that recommends builds based on global player data. Seasonal cosmetics are also being upgraded, with two Mythic skins planned for every season in 2026 and a Hello Kitty & Friends collab coming from February 10 to 23.
