Persona director says ‘network intrusion’ led to recent leaks of next franchise entry

A bummer.

Popular JRPG studio ATLUS “suffered a network intrusion” that led to recent leaks of a new Persona game now in development, according to the game’s director.

Katsura Hashino confirmed recent leaks in a social media post this morning, a result of “an unauthorized third party” that “illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Persona title.” And that’s what led to Hashino posting this on May 28:

Yeah, that’s a tough one to swallow, for sure. Thankfully, Hashino said that the studio doesn’t expect “any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects,” so that’s some good news about all of this, at least.

“We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way,” Hashino said. “Our work on the next Persona game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”

As exciting as leaks can be for players and fans, it’s always a big bummer for those who are working hard on a game that’s brought into the public eye before it’s ready, so I definitely feel for ATLUS here. It’s even worse that it appears to be from a nefarious hack and not accidental or otherwise.

I’ve never played the Persona series, but I know it’s beloved by many RPG fans all over the world, so I understand why there’s excitement around the leaks. Players had been wondering for a few days if they were real, so this confirmation from Hashino solidifies them, which has led to even more hype in the replies that many enjoy what they saw.

“We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce to you to this next game when it is ready,” Hashino said. “We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.”
