Synergy levels are the Persona5: The Phantom X way of developing friendships and relationships with various characters in the game. Ranging from friends to soulmates, the choice is in your hands regarding who you wish to romance, and who is best served in the friend zone.
Throughout your days of attending school, working part-time jobs, and cleaning up around the house, an occasional option is to spend time with a certain character. This will unlock a cutscene where you build your synergy with said character.
Don’t worry, these aren’t pointless cutscenes that are tied down to a meaningless level-up system. You actually get rewarded for your efforts in the form of Meta Jewels, Yen, and Platinum Milicoins, while also unlocking frames, emojis, and avatars.
This guide will highlight the many relationships available in Persona5: The Phantom X, what potential each one holds, and what to expect from every encounter. It’s all in your hands whether you choose to dedicate some time in each day to build those friendships into something more.
How To Increase Synergy in Persona5: The Phantom X
Like you would in real life, building up synergy in Persona5: The Phantom X is as simple as giving a character your full, undivided attention. Take them to a movie, hang out on a ferris wheel, and engage in some discussion about whatever is on their mind.
Every now and then, you can spend some Activity Points during your day spending time with a certain character. Like with working part-time jobs, you should take advantage of this whenever possible, as building synergy levels leads to greater relationships and bountiful rewards.
Each character also unlocks various other traits. Be on the look-out for the following characters and their rewards:
- Merope — Unlocks Fuse recipes for more Personas by spending time with her and fulfilling her requests.
- Lufel — Unlocks Palace and Metaverse by completing Missions and Main Quest story.
- Yui — Unlocks planters and other options for cultivating plants by meeting her in the Harvest World Online game at home.
- Yaoling Li — Unlocks Cooking Recipes by meeting with her in the city and exploring different spots.
- Motoha — Grants some nice rewards for completing quests and meeting her in City Life.
- Tomoko — Grants some nice rewards by completing sub-quests related to her and meeting her in City Life.
- Kayo — Grants some nice rewards by completing sub-quests related to her.
Some characters may also ask questions during your encounter, which contribute to higher synergy, so make sure you answer anything they ask.
Give Presents During Your Friendly Encounter
You’ll also have the option to offer a gift during your encounter, which is a great way of elevating that synergy level much higher. When prompted, be sure to look for certain gifts that offer a higher synergy bonus, as they often relate to the type of character you’re dealing with.
For example, Yui appreciates receiving plant-related gifts, while Yaoling Li prefers presents that lean more towards the food variety. Every gift does raise synergy regardless, so don’t worry about losing any groundwork; they’ll love what you give them regardless.
Gifts that align with their personality will receive a «Well-received» plus-four bonus, and an additional plus-eight for the first time you deliver a well-received gift.
Not All Friendships Are Equal
You may have noticed that in Persona5: The Phantom X, you can build a friendship to the status of Soulmate. While this is true, not all characters can become your soulmate, which may crush some of your dream relationships.
It’s also important to note that while many options are available for both Soulmate and Best Friend, you may only choose one for each category. Also, when you choose, you may never alter your choice, meaning you’re stuck with who you pick forever.

Be sure you’re choosing the option that is best suited to your liking, because you only get one each. Characters will also unlock emotes and avatars at ranks 18 and 20, respectively, giving you a little extra incentive for the route you take.
