PETA wants to give an abandoned KFC a second life by turning it into the world’s first “Chicken Empathy Museum.”
The animal rights organization has set its sights on a vacant former KFC in Fleetwood, Lancashire, with plans to replace fried chicken meals with exhibits dedicated to the birds.
In a letter to Landwood Property Auctions, PETA asked whether the building’s owner would consider lending or donating the property for educational use.
However, the plan has already hit a snag. Landwood reportedly sold the building last summer and advised PETA to track down its current owner through the UK Land Registry.

PETA wants to serve vegan food inside former KFC
If PETA gets its way, visitors would learn about chickens’ intelligence, emotional lives and social bonds through educational displays.
The proposed attraction would also feature PETA’s chicken mascot (who they tried to get Nintendo to add to Super Smash Bros) and serve vegan food. Its more graphic exhibits would include slaughterhouse equipment such as kill cones and shackles.
“PETA would be delighted to help transform a place once linked to suffering into one that inspires compassion,” PETA Vice President of Vegan Projects Dawn Carr said.
“What better use for a former fried-chicken restaurant than a place dedicated to understanding – and respecting – the birds who have long paid the ultimate price for fast food?”
The former restaurant is located on Lord Street and covers approximately 2,126 square feet across two connected retail units. It previously had room for up to 62 diners but has reportedly been vacant for some time.

Local councillor Mary Belshaw described PETA’s proposal as “a novel idea”.
“I would rather have a chicken empathy museum than another large empty property on our high street,” she told the BBC. “Who knows? It could become a huge attraction for the town.”

The museum pitch is the latest unconventional campaign from PETA. The organization previously asked Nintendo to remove Cow’s nose ring in Mario Kart World and suggested a vegan guide for Palworld.
And just last year, PETA urged Sean Evans to replace the chicken wings on Hot Ones with vegan alternatives.
For now, PETA still needs to find the former KFC’s owner before its museum plans can get off the ground.
