Pokémon Go Azelf counters, weaknesses and moveset explained

How to catch this Lake Guardian in Pokémon Go.

Pokémon Go Azelf counters, weaknesses and moveset explained

Azelf, the Willpower Pokémon, can be found in both raids and in the wild in Pokémon Go.

That said, it is a regional exclusive Legendary Pokémon and its ability to spawn in the wild in the Americas and Greenland is purely a technicality; the vast majority of players will never see one in the overworld. To all intents as purposes, this is a Raid boss, a Pokédex filler, and nothing more in Pokémon Go.

It shares this status with the other Lake Guardians – Mesprit and Azelf.

If appearing in a raid, Uxie, like all Legendary Pokémon, has a five-star rating. Depending on the strength of your Pokémon, you may need to team up with other trainers, which, thanks to Remote Raiding, you can now do from home.

Azelf counters and weaknesses in Pokémon Go

If you wish to defeat Azelf in Pokémon Go, then you’ll need to know both its weakness and the best counters to use against it:

  • Azelf type: Psychic-type
  • Azelf is weak against: Bug, Dark and Ghost-type attacks
  • Azelf is resistant to: Fighting and Psychic-type attacks
  • Azelf Mega counters: Mega Tyranitar, Mega Houndoom and Mega Absol are your best options here.
  • Mesprit counters: Dawn Wings Necrozma (Shadow Claw and Moongeist Beam) is an absolute ultra beast, and it stands to reason this is the top counter against pretty much all mono-Psychic Pokémon. It’s on par with Mega Tyranitar with Brutal Swing, which speaks volumes… Following up from that, we have Shadow and regular Tyranitar with Brutal Swing, and Hydreigon. Beyond this we start seeing diminishing returns, but you should be turning to Shadow Chandelure, Darkrai, Giratina (Origin Forme), Incineroar and Hoopa Unbound.
  • Number of players to beat Azelf: Azelf is much easier than its cousin Uxie, and is doable with just two trainers with perfect counters. Otherwise, a group of 3–5 trainers is ideal.
  • Tactics: Brutal Swing is the way to go against Azelf!

Everything we know about Azelf

According to its official Pokédex page, Azelf is ‘Known as «The Being of Willpower.» It sleeps at the bottom of a lake to keep the world in balance.’

Amusingly, you might expect this to mean that this is the member of the trio that keeps its eyes shut; but that would be incorrect. That would be Uxie, who will MIB your memories if you look into its eyes. Also, as dyed in the Wooloo insomniacs, we would like to add that if sleeping were a matter of willpower, we would have far fewer coffee-fuelled bad puns in our writing.

Pokémon Go Azelf counters, weaknesses and moveset explained

Azelf is a member of the Lake Guardians who originate from the Sinnoh region. Along with Uxie and Mesprit, Azelf was created by Arceus – i.e. Poké-god – and made its home at Lake Valor in eastern Sinnoh.

Legends tell that Arceus tasked the Lake Guardians with two important tasks – the first was to calm Dialga and Palkia if they ever went into a rage, and the second was to teach certain abilities to humans. Since Azelf is the Pokémon of willpower, it taught humans the ability of willpower, giving them free will.

Other stories, however, demonstrate a less benevolent side of Azelf, claiming that the Pokémon, wanting to be left alone, would steal the willpower of humans to send them away so that it could be left undisturbed.

Interestingly, the Lake Guardians are currently the only legendary trio in the Pokémon universe that all share the same exact typing.

Good luck finding a perfect Azelf in Pokémon Go!
