Ryan Gosling‘s upcoming sci-fi venture, Project Hail Mary, has been billed as the closest thing to a franchise-free, one-and-done global blockbuster since Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet. Puck‘s Matthew Belloni reported that even though the movie’s gross budget clocked at $248 million. Although the net cost reduced to $200 million following tax incentives, it’s still one of Amazon MGM studios’ biggest bets to date.
Going by the unspoken box-office rule, the movie would need to gross 2.5X its production budget to turn a profit, which puts its break-even point around $500 million. While it’s no easy feat, especially in the current box-office climate, where new IPs rarely hit big at the box office, the target may not be out of reach for this sci-fi epic, especially given the buzz surrounding it.

Can Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Replicate The Martian‘s Success?

Both Project Hail Mary and The Martian come from the same author, Andy Weir, and screenwriter Drew Goddard, who penned The Martian‘s screenplay for the big screen, is also responsible for Project Hail Mary‘s script. In addition to that, both of them revolve around survival in isolation, albeit the Gosling-led movie is more sci-fi heavy than its more grounded predecessor, which did rake in $630 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo).
To be fair, The Martian did release under very different circumstances, and the post-pandemic box office has made it difficult for original blockbusters to thrive globally. Interestingly, the box office projection for its opening weekend stands at $42-60 million (via Box Office Theory), which is not far off from The Martian’s $54 million domestic opening.
Following its strong social media buzz and the star power of Ryan Gosling, coupled with audiences’ appetite to experience something fresh, things are indeed looking promising for one of Amazon MGM studios’ biggest bets.
Project Hail Mary‘s Early Buzz is Overwhelmingly Positive
As for its theatrical prospects, the word of mouth will play a crucial role in its box-office legs beyond its opening. While the review embargo won’t lift until March 20, early social media reactions to the movie suggest promise for the Barbie star’s original sci-fi venture.

One user noted that the movie feels an immaculate blend of Gravity‘s problem solving exhileration, The Martian‘s humor, and Interstellar‘s emotions, while also retaining its distinct charm. Another expressed that it remains faithful to Weir’s novel, and some even deemed it Greig Fraser‘s best work.
PROJECT HAIL MARY feels, in many ways, like a miracle of a movie. PROJECT HAIL MARY is perfect and my favorite work Greig Fraser has done and he was already the best guy doing it.

PROJECT HAIL MARY is a faithful adaptation of the book and as such, incredibly charming and imaginative. More than that, it continues Weir’s uncanny ability to transform hard science into palatable mass market entertainment. Excited to spend the next year debating astrobiology!

Most importantly, this movie has earned the seal of approval from Guillermo del Toro, who was vocal about his love for this movie. With a few more weeks to go, it remains to be seen how it’ll fare among the general audience.
