Sony Adjusts PlayStation 5 Pricing in Key Markets
Sony has revealed significant alterations to the pricing structure of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) across multiple regions including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the UK. While certain models of the console are seeing price hikes, the cost for the optional PS5 disc drive is set to decrease. The company attributed these adjustments to factors such as “high inflation” and fluctuating “exchange rates.” This realignment positions the PS5 pricing closer to that of competitors like the Switch 2, which is priced at €469/£395/AUD $699.95.
Variations by Region
In Europe and the UK, the only increase affects the PS5 Digital Edition, which will now cost €499.99 instead of the previous €399.99. Meanwhile, the UK price will rise to £429.99 from £359.99. On a brighter note, the price of the disc drive has dropped significantly, now retailing at €79.99 and £69.99, down from €119.99 and £99.99 respectively.
Impacts in Australia and New Zealand
For gamers in Australia and New Zealand, the pricing adjustments will see both variants of the PlayStation 5—standard and Digital Edition—become more expensive. The disc-less model will be priced at AUD $749.95 and NZD $859.95, while versions including the disc drive will cost AUD $829.95 and NZD $949.95. Notably, the new lower pricing for the disc drive will be set at AUD $124.95 and NZD $139.95.
Geographic Scope of Changes
Currently, only the regions mentioned are experiencing these pricing updates. As of now, Sony has not indicated any potential changes for markets in Asia or North America, leaving uncertainty about future price adjustments in those areas.
Availability and Key Dates
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, standard model, and the accompanying disc drive are all available globally. However, the new prices in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the UK will come into effect on April 14, 2025.
