Rematch’s budding community is a real melting pot of cultures: you have Rocket League players, football fans, five-a-side players, and perhaps the most dreaded people of all… Blue Lock fans.
For those unaware, Blue Lock is a shonen sports manga (later adapted into an anime) about finding Japan’s next star striker. The titular Blue Lock programme is a brutal competition where those who are eliminated are barred from ever representing Japan at an international level.
The anime has all the tropes and trappings of a shonen series, which may be off-putting to football fans, but Blue Lock has grown very popular among anime fans.
So, how does this relate to Rematch? Well, Blue Lock-inspired names and custom characters are a regular sight on the solo queue ladder. It’s especially common to see characters resembling Meguru Bachira, identifiable by his signature long black hair with yellow highlights.
Unfortunately for other Rematch players, the philosophy behind the aforementioned Blue Lock programme is to build the «ultimate egoist» striker, essentially the most selfish and ruthless forward in the world. This obviously isn’t viable in real-life football, but nobody told these players that.

An unknowing Reddit user named Fat-Cloud recently shone a light on these players, realising that everyone with the black hair, yellow highlights haircut played similarly.
«They’re like the BMW in traffic,» they write. «Never pass, spam good job when someone makes an error, dribble as goalkeeper. Is this from a kid’s show or something?»
An astute observation, and commenters were quick to point out that the selfish way these players play doesn’t actually reflect Bachira’s playstyle.
«Bachira, from Blue Lock,» comments TejoY. «Well known for his dribbling skills and passes. Somehow, fanboys of his forget that last part.»
Rematch is a game that requires a lot of teamwork, and one person refusing to pass can quickly unravel a team. There’s a reason so many posts about the game are bemoaning poor teammates, as succeeding in Rematch is far easier with a coordinated group, and the majority of players play solo queue.
«It’s a character from a show called Blue Lock,» Slim_Lazy comments. «They all essentially think they are ‘him'».
Although Blue Lock certainly begins as a caricature of football, teamwork becomes more and more important as the show progresses. Perhaps these Bachira cosplayers haven’t finished the anime yet.
