Retroware Unveils New Toxic Crusaders Gameplay Trailer Ahead of Toxic Avenger Feature Film Reboot's Premiere

Retroware has just given fans a new look at gameplay from the hotly anticipated Toxic Crusaders. Per Bloody Disgusting, Retroware unveiled the new gameplay trailer during the MIX Summer Games Showcase. The trailer came alongside the first look at more of the upcoming title’s in-game content.

Unfortunately, this also came along with the confirmation that Toxic Crusaders has yet again been pushed back to later this year, meaning fans will have to wait at least a few more months to step into the shoes of their favorite irradiated antiheroes.

original 1991 animated series of the same name, which itself was loosely based on the long-running The Toxic Avenger film series from Troma Entertainment, Toxic Crusaders is a 2D side-scrolling beat-em-up in the likeness of the fan-favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and similar arcade games.

The game will feature a sprawling cast of playable characters ranging from Toxie himself to Nozone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s girlfriend Yvonne, and even Toxie’s own mother, Mrs. Junko. Players will battle across stages inspired by the original franchise, as well as those inspired by other classic Troma films such as 1986’s Class of Nuke ‘Em High and the far more recent Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead from 2006.

As players navigate the various dank and dark corners of Toxic Crusaders, they will face off against both classic animated villains, such as Dr. Killemoff, and entirely new monstrosities, many of whom will serve as bosses in different game stages. To help mitigate any damage they will inevitably take, players can take advantage of Toxic Crusaders‘ Tag Out System, which allows them to switch between different playable characters when the corresponding meter is filled. Currently, Toxic Crusaders is slated to be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.

Fans of the Toxic Avenger franchise are currently eagerly awaiting the release of the reboot starring Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood. Filmed all the way back in 2021, The Toxic Avenger has been the subject of countless headlines since it was announced, yet the film spent years floundering following its premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2023. Thankfully, The Toxic Avenger has since secured an official release date and is now slated to arrive in theaters across North America on Aug. 29.

Toxic Crusaders is set to be released sometime this year.
