Roblox Corp.

Roblox is introducing a new AI-powered system that automatically rephrases profanity in chat messages instead of replacing them with the familiar string of hash symbols.

The company says the change is designed to keep conversations easier to follow while still enforcing its Community Standards during real-time gameplay communication.

It’s all a part of a broader overhaul to Roblox’s chat filtering tools, which millions of players rely on daily to communicate while playing games and coordinating with teammates.

Roblox explained that blocked messages currently appear as “#####,” which can disrupt conversations and make it harder for players to understand what someone was trying to say.

“A natural, fluid chat is vital for games where teams or communities play together,” Roblox said in its announcement. “Strings of ##### where inappropriate language was blocked can disrupt chat, be hard to follow, and interrupt gameplay.”

Roblox adds AI tool that rewrites profanity in chat messages

Under the new system, AI will automatically rewrite certain messages that contain profanity into versions that still follow Roblox’s rules while preserving the original intent.

For example, a message like “Hurry tf up!” may instead appear as “Hurry up!” in chat rather than being fully censored.

Roblox described the change as a shift away from hard blocking toward more contextual guidance.

“Think of this system as a steering wheel, rather than a stop sign,” the company explained. “If a message violates our policy, everyone in the chat is notified that the text has been rephrased to keep things civil.”

The feature launches focused specifically on profanity. Roblox said users who repeatedly attempt to bypass chat rules will still face the same moderation consequences as before. The company also noted that the feature is only available for in-experience chat between age-verified users within similar age groups and their Trusted Connections.

Alongside the rephrasing feature, Roblox also updated the backend of its text filtering system. The platform now uses a third AI layer that sends uncertain messages to larger reasoning models capable of analyzing context.

According to the company, this improved system is better at detecting attempts to bypass filters, including leet-speak, where letters are replaced with numbers or symbols. They also added that the change reduced false negatives for users sharing or soliciting personal information, such as phone numbers or social media handles, by 20 times.

As the system evolves, Roblox said its long-term goal is to reduce the number of “#####” censorship markers players see in chat and eventually remove them entirely.
