Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's Sinners Makes Vampire Film History Thanks to Early Reviews

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s latest big-screen collaboration, Sinners, can do no wrong among critics, earning a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Warner Bros. supernatural thriller makes history thanks to this coveted feat before its anticipated Easter premiere.

Currently, Sinners is the highest-rated vampire film in Rotten Tomatoes history, thanks to its 100% critical score on the review aggregator. Sinners‘ closest competition is the Swedish vampire movie, Let the Right One In (98%), with F.W. Murnau’s original Nosferatu film (97%) and Taiki Waititi’s mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows (96%) right behind.

Time will tell if Sinners maintains that perfect rating once the film begins its cinematic run this week. However, the critical reviews, which praised Jordan’s dual-role performance and the original story by Coogler, indicate that Coogler and Jordan have found gold together again with their latest joint effort. Sinners is the fifth movie Coogler and Jordan have made together, after the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. Warner Bros.’ faith in the long-time collaborators and their results together was why they won a bidding war for the film’s distribution rights early last year.

Set in the 1930s in Mississippi, Sinners was inspired by Coogler’s family history, specifically an uncle who grew up in the southern state. The upcoming blockbuster chronicles Jordan’s twin brother characters, Smoke and Stack, who return to Mississippi hoping to move past their past traumas. However, they encounter much greater evil than they could have imagined, as some new faces they meet are anything but friendly.

Jordan stars in Sinners alongside The Harder They Fall‘s Delroy Lindo (Delta Slim), Spider-Verse franchise actor Hailee Steinfeld (Mary), 28 Years Later‘s Jack O’Connell (Remmick), Loki‘s Wunmi Mosaku (Annie) and The Batman‘s Jayme Lawson (Pearline). Jordan recently spoke about why he and Coogler have developed such strong trust throughout their working relationship, telling Inside the NBA, «We cut from the same cloth. He’s an extremely hard worker, a very empathetic person,» Jordan said. «We started out making movies around the same time, and we just kinda...we got that chemistry, man. When you get a rhythm with somebody, and they know how to inspire you, and they know how to get the best out of you…he’s kind of like a coach on set, he puts me in positions to win

Sinners Is Set for a Solid Opening

Along with the strong reviews, Sinners looks set for a solid box office opening, potentially topping $40 million domestically during its first three days in theaters against a budget ranging from $90 million to $100 million. The R-rated film will battle at the box office with another Warner Bros. title, The Minecraft Movie, the second-highest-grossing film released this year ($550 million worldwide).

Sinners opens in theaters on Apr. 18.
