Samara Weaving's 2024 Action Horror Movie Gets a New Streaming Home

IFC Films’ action horror thriller Azrael will finally be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2024 movie was led by rising scream queen Samara Weaving, who’s best known for her breakout performance in the 2019 dark comedy horror Ready or Not.

Beginning on April 25, Azrael will officially be available for streaming on Hulu. The action horror movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after many years since “The Rapture” occurred. The devastating aftermath of the biblical phenomenon left the remaining survivors to fend for themselves against the Burned Ones, described as demonic humanoid monsters who crave human flesh and blood. Weaving portrays the titular character, who must not only avoid getting eaten by the Burned Ones, but must also fight for her survival against a forest-dwelling cult who are trying to hunt her down to sacrifice her to their enemies.

Azrael was directed by E.L. Katz (ABCs of Death 2) from a screenplay written by Simon Barrett (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire). Besides Weaving, the movie also featured Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Kenan, Vic Carmen Sonne as Miriam, Johhan Rosenberg as Anton, Eero Milonoff as Luther, Sebastian Bull Sarning as Isaac, Rea Lest as Liesl, Phong Giang as Sevrin, Katariina Unt as Josefine, and more. Since having its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, it has garnered a Tomatometer rating of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 77 reviews. Most of the critics singled out Weaving’s leading performance as the main highlight of the film. As CBR’s review stated, «The actors give the best performances they can, as they fully dedicate themselves to acting without words.»

Samara Weaving Returns for Ready or Not 2

Weaving will next be seen reprising her iconic role as Grace in Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming Ready or Not sequel, which will once again be directed by the Radio Silence team’s directing duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Further details about the sequel’s plot and new characters are still being kept under wraps. Grace was last seen by fans walking out of a burning mansion after she successfully avoided death at the hands of her husband’s wealthy devil-worshiping family during their wedding night. Weaving will be joined by fellow new-generation scream queen Kathryn Newton, who previously worked with Bettinelli and Gillett on the 2024 horror comedy Abigail.

When the project was first announced, the directing duo assured fans that writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy’s script “is an absolute f—ing banger of a sequel.” Gillet continued, «That movie is truly the love of our creative lives in a lot of ways. I don’t think we knew after making it that there would be so much story left to tell. We’re so proud of what that first movie is, we’re so proud of what the sequel is. We’re just really excited, and fingers crossed that it gets made.» At the moment, the movie has no official release date yet.
