Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson recalled how she got a long email from one of the previous Jurassic World stars, after she officially signed on to Jurassic World Rebirth. In the latest installment, Johansson portrays the role of an expert covert operative tasked with leading an extraction team to one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
During a recent interview with People, Johansson shared that Jurassic World vet Bryce Dallas Howard immediately showed her support through a long email, welcoming the Marvel star to the Jurassic family. «When I first got cast, Bryce Dallas Howard reached out to me and was so excited. She wrote me a whole long email about her experience and how wonderful the fans were and how that was part of the excitement, joining the Jurassic family and having these fans for life.” Besides Howard, Johansson confirmed that Jurassic Park star Laura Dern “was also so pumped” for her casting in Jurassic World Rebirth. She previously worked with Dern on the acclaimed Netflix drama movie Marriage Story.
Jurassic World Rebirth was directed by Gareth Edwards from a script written by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp, with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg serving as an executive producer. Edwards is no stranger to the sci-fi action genre, after previously directing 2014’s Godzilla, 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and 2023’s The Creator. Besides Johansson, the ensemble cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein. The story is a standalone sequel that takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion.
The official synopsis reads: «The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs and those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett is contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park. There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery.”
Jurassic World Rebirth Receives Mixed Reviews
Even though early reactions from critics compared the movie to the original 1993 movie, Jurassic World Rebirth wasn’t able to score a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So far, it currently holds a 52% Tomatometer rating, which is still a bit higher than the last two installments’ ratings. In a previous interview, Edwards addressed the audiences’ lack of interest in dinosaurs. «There’s been many dinosaur films in terms of [Jurassic Park movies], and the audience, you’ve got to do something new and fresh to give them a reason to come see the movie,» he said. «And so by acknowledging that at the beginning and saying, ‘Look, audiences aren’t that interested in dinosaurs anymore,’ I thought it was like, ‘Okay, well, this is an honest beginning. Let’s see where we go from here.'»
