Should I Marry A Murderer? is a new Netflix documentary about a terrible secret that destroys multiple lives, but the series omits an important detail about the story.
True crime documentary Should I Marry a Murderer? documents pathologist Caroline Muirhead’s efforts to put her fiancee Sandy McKellar behind bars.
Soon after the couple got engaged, Sandy told Caroline that he and twin brother Robert had previously hit cyclist Tony Parsons while driving drunk, then covered up the crime by burying his body.
Caroline went to the police with that information, and after a protracted investigation, the brothers were arrested, and the case went to trial. But in spite of being compelled to testify, Muirhead didn’t appear in court, for a reason that isn’t mentioned in the Netflix series.
Caroline Muirhead refused to testify against Sandy McKellar due to BBC doc

In the third and final episode of Should I Marry a Murderer?, David Green, former head of homicide and major crime for Scotland’s Crown Office, says: “It was perfectly clear to me that Caroline Muirhead was the foundation of this case. If we were to try to secure justice, we would need her in court to give evidence against the McKellars.”
But Muirhead had found solace in drink and drugs while secretly recording Sandy McKellar to help make the case, and worried that she wasn’t “in a fit place” to testify.
Caroline was then warned she’d held in contempt of court if she didn’t appear, but “in a panic,” Muirhead missed the court date in favor of searching for the victim’s missing bike.
But what Should I Marry a Murderer? omits is the fact that Muirhead had also become panicked by a BBC crew that was shooting a documentary about the case.

NetflixThe McKellar brothers in court.
Speaking to The Daily Record in 2023, Muirhead said that as soon as she heard the judge was allowing a crew into court, she told police she didn’t want to appear on film. They responded by warning Caroline there would be “consequences” if she didn’t show.
“I was completely mentally unravelled,” Muirhead explained. “I didn’t really know what I was doing. Even though the documentary crew said they would change my name and my voice, it didn’t matter.”
She therefore effectively went on the run, with police tracking her down later that day and arresting Muirhead. But when the McKellar brothers pled guilty to multiple charges, Caroline was released without a charge of her own.
She now lives at the seaside with a new partner, while Sandy McKellar is currently serving 12 years for culpable homicide and attempting to pervert the course of justice, while Robert is serving five years and three months for attempting to pervert the course of justice
