After its theatrical success, Ryan Coogler’s hit film Sinners is now streaming on Max. This also makes history by offering a new viewing option that’s never been done for a streaming release.
Per Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinners has two viewing options available on Max: the theatrical cut and the Black American Sign Language (BASL) version. It’s the first time that a streaming service has exclusively debuted a film interpreted in BASL. WBD has described BASL as a «distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances.»
“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach,» WBD’s SVP of Global Product Management, Naomi Waibel, said in a statement. «Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve. Sinners with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.”
Sinners with BASL is interpreted by Nakia Smith, an «influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline.» Director of Artistic Sign Language Rosa Lee Timm also has used her expertise to ensure cultural authenticity. Timm’s previous work includes directing ASL versions of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie, which are also streaming exclusively on Max.
Additionally, Max offers ASL versions of other titles, such as HBO’s hit series The Last of Us and the popular Warner Bros. Pictures films Barbie and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Sinners Has Now Arrived on Max After Having Huge Theatrical Success
Sinners was a huge hit when it was released in theaters this year. It made over $364 million worldwide, a remarkable feat for an original film that’s not part of an established franchise. It was also heavily acclaimed, garnering a near-perfect approval rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even with several months left to go, many critics and filmgoers already consider Sinners to be among the best movies of 2025.
Sinners was written and directed by Ryan Coogler, marking his latest collaboration with Michael B. Jordan. In the film, Jordan plays twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown to start over only to find that something evil has taken over. The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
Coogler produced the film with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. It is executive produced by Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield, and Rebecca Cho.
