A new report has claimed that Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley has joined the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in a “key role”, and while we’re yet to get confirmation, fans already have the perfect character in mind.
Sonic 3 was a huge success when it dropped in 2024, becoming the best-rated movie in the trilogy on Rotten Tomatoes and the highest-grossing entry in the series. In short, the video game franchise has come a long way since the ‘Ugly Sonic’ debacle.
Paramount gave the greenlight for a fourth film before the third dropped, with Jeff Fowler returning as director. The Sonic movies have already introduced a number of key characters, including Tails (Colleen Ann O’Shaughnessey), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Shadow (Keanu Reeves).
We also know Amy Rose (Kristen Bell) will be making an appearance after the events of the post-credits scene. But there are still plenty of secrets to be revealed, one of which may have just surfaced.
Sonic 4 reportedly adds Ben Kingsley to cast in key role
According to Hollywood scooper Jeff Sneider, Ben Kingsley has joined the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 cast in a “key role”, and while there are plenty of theories about who he could play, one name keeps cropping up: Neo Metal Sonic.

The third movie firmly established Shadow the Hedgehog and expanded the franchise’s lore beyond Doctor Eggman, whose future remains uncertain following the events of Sonic 3. Although Jim Carrey’s open to returning somehow, the fourth flick will be focusing on a new villain.

Plus, Metal Sonic appeared in the Sonic 3 post-credits scene, so this could be a natural evolution. In the games, Neo Metal Sonic is a more advanced, self-aware form of Metal Sonic who can match and even overpower Sonic and replicate others’ skills and abilities.
The character would suit Kingsley’s skills in portraying menacing villains. If you remember, he played the violent psychopath Don Logan in Sexy Beast and the deceptive actor Trevor Slattery in the MCU.
He’s proven he can play intelligent, quietly terrifying antagonists, and a voice or performance-capture role would work well in this context.

There’s also the rumors that Sonic 4 will at least draw inspiration from Sonic Heroes, a game that introduced Neo Metal Sonic. It’s for these reasons many fans think Kingsley would be a perfect fit.
Over on Reddit, one wrote, “Well, they better give him a great role to play. He’s a legendary actor and deserves the best, maybe Neo Metal Sonic. I’m genuinely hoping he doesn’t play a live action human and it’s all goofy.”
Another said on X, “Here are some of my guesses: 1: Eggman Nega. 2: Neo Metal Sonic. 3. Somebody from G.U.N.” Another commented, “It’s either someone from GUN, some other human or Neo Metal Sonic.”
In a separate thread, one said, “Metal Sonic voice actor?” to which another replied, “Nope, Metal Sonic won’t be voiced.” But a third chimed in, “He probably will if they’re going to make the main metal Neo (which they hopefully will).”

However, other fans aren’t as convinced, including this person who said, “Nope, no Neo Metal ever, just normal Metal, there will not be anything from Sonic Heroes at all, only Sonic CD.”
A second chimed in, “The only role I can see him filling is Metal Sonic, and I’m not too certain they’ll give him a voice, unless they decide to be f**king hype and show off Neo Metal Sonic but those odds are slim.”
Other guesses include Big the Cat or Professor Pickle, but for now, it’s all guesswork. We won’t know for certain until there’s official news on the casting.
