Sony Unveils Cloud Streaming for PS5 on PlayStation Portal
Sony has announced the official launch of its Cloud Streaming service for PlayStation 5 games, set to activate on November 5 at 6 PM PT. This innovative feature is available exclusively for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, marking the transition from last year’s Cloud Streaming beta to a fully-fledged service. Gamers can now enjoy their favorite titles from both their library and the PlayStation Plus catalogs seamlessly.
Extensive Game Library at Launch
Upon its debut, a vast selection of PS5 games will be compatible with Cloud Streaming. Among the notable titles are Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, and Resident Evil 4. Players can also explore hundreds of additional options within the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, featuring critically acclaimed games such as Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Sword of the Sea, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Revamped Home Screen Experience
To enhance user experience, the PS Portal home screen has been redesigned to incorporate three distinct tabs:
- Remote Play Tab: Connects directly to a paired PS5 console, allowing users to play installed games (no PS Plus required).
- Cloud Streaming Tab: A new dedicated interface for instant streaming of compatible PS5 games.
- Search Tab: Facilitates quick searches for any game that supports Cloud Streaming.
Enhanced Features for Seamless Play
This update not only introduces the Cloud Streaming functionality but also improves existing features for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming sessions. Key enhancements include:
- 3D Audio Support: Available in supported games when using compatible wired or PlayStation Link wireless audio devices, such as Pulse Explore/Elite.
- Passcode Lock: Adds a new layer of security to protect your device.
- Internet Connection Quality Check: A quick menu option that allows users to assess their connection quality easily.
Cloud Streaming Specific Innovations
Unique features tailored for Cloud Streaming further elevate the gaming experience:
- In-game purchases can now be made without exiting the active game session.
- New accessibility options, including a screen reader and adjustable text size, are available in the Settings > Cloud Streaming menu.
- Game invitations permit players to join multiplayer sessions directly through the Quick menu.
New Possibilities for PS Portal Users
According to Sony, Cloud Streaming opens up exciting new use cases for the PS Portal. Players can now enjoy the flexibility of gaming even while someone else uses the PS5 under a different account, or while another individual watches a movie on the console. Furthermore, this feature provides true portability, enabling users to stream PS5 games from virtually anywhere as long as they have a high-speed Wi-Fi connection—even if their home console is powered off or occupied.
