
Spirit Airlines has begun a wind-down of its operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling all flights with immediate effect.
The announcement was published on the company’s restructuring website, marking the end of the airline’s 34-year run after a period of financial restructuring.
Spirit tells passengers not to go to the airport
According to the BBC, in the days leading up to the closure, Spirit had been attempting to secure a $500 million bailout, but failed to reach an agreement with creditors and government backers.
“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately,” the company said.
“To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”
In a post on X/Twitter, the company said it would be automatically processing refunds for any flights purchased “with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment.”
It remains unknown how flights booked via other means will be handled, other than that such cases will be determined at a later date.

In a separate notice on its site, the airline told customers: “Spirit Guests should not go to the airport,” confirming that all flights had been cancelled and directing passengers to online resources for further information about bookings and next steps.
The shutdown followed the company entering restructuring proceedings, with the wind-down confirming that operations would not continue.

Spirit reiterated its thanks to customers, adding: “Thank you for choosing Spirit – we are grateful to all our Guests who flew with us over the past 34 years.”
