Review
Star Wars: Squadrons was a promising entry in the continuously growing Star Wars game catalog, but the first-person flight combat adventure failed to gain any serious longevity. However, this doesn’t mean Star Wars: Squadrons isn’t worth the time. This particular Star Wars game nailed its mechanics and combat, but its lack of content was arguably the deciding factor in its fate.
There is plenty of room for Squadrons to improve, and the action-packed flight simulator may finally have the perfect opportunity to do so. Last month, the Star Wars Celebration took place, and there were plenty of exciting announcements made. From a brand-new turn-based tactics game titled Star Wars Zero Company to the animated Darth Maul series, the event was filled with surprises. However, one of the biggest reveals of all was Star Wars: Starfighter.
Star Wars: Starfighter Sets the Stage for Squadrons to Have the Comeback It Deserves
Everything Known About Star Wars: Starfighter, So Far
- Ryan Gosling will play the lead role.
- Shawn Levy is on board as the film’s director.
- The story takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
- The movie is slated to release on Memorial Day 2027.
- Star Wars: Starfighter begins production this fall.
A Star Wars movie based around a pilot is exciting enough, but having the talent of Ryan Gosling leading Star Wars: Starfighter‘s cast gives the project an extra dose of intrigue. Only time will tell exactly what the film has in store for Star Wars fans, but it has hopefully opened the door for a Squadrons sequel due to the similarities both projects share.
Of course, it’s important to note that nothing has been confirmed, and this is purely speculation, but a movie like Star Wars: Starfighter is the perfect excuse to push Squadrons into franchise territory. It was well-received by players, thanks to its strong gameplay, but a sequel would have a great opportunity to make its post-launch content a much more satisfying experience.
Director Shawn Levy recently had a big hit on his hands with last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2024.
A Squadrons Sequel Has Plenty of Tie-In Potential
Not only could Squadrons get a second chance at giving players better post-launch content, but it could also be an exciting way to expand the lore and story of Starfighter. Star Wars games present the chance to explore the franchise’s universe even deeper, and a new Squadrons entry could work wonders for a movie counterpart. Such a sequel could even be used as a great marketing opportunity to build excitement leading up to the film’s launch or act as a -up post-release.
In order to make up for the first Squadrons‘ post-launch content woes, adding Ryan Gosling’s protagonist and other unannounced characters as DLC could be the key to a longer lifespan than its predecessor. Squadrons helped shake up the Star Wars gaming landscape, and it would be exciting to see how a sequel would address tying itself to a film while also maintaining a unique identity.
Right Now, Star Wars: Squadrons Remains a Charming One-Off
A sequel to Squadrons may simply be a pipe dream. Still, as the release of Starfighter draws closer, it will be interesting to see if there’s a surge in gamers seeking out epic Star Wars dogfights in Squadrons. Only time will tell, but until then, Squadrons remains a fun flight simulator that has the potential for more.
