A Steam Machine owner who reported a “red line of death” error has revealed their console recovered on its own after being left unplugged overnight, after some community-led troubleshooting.
The term, coined in reference to the Xbox 360’s infamous ‘red ring of death,’ that caused countless headaches back in the mid 2000s, references the red LED error code immediately displayed on the Steam Machine when the device experiences an error.

The Reddit user originally claimed they had only managed to play around five minutes of No Man’s Sky before installing an available update.
“Got five minutes of No Man’s Sky in, then I installed the update the machine had available and it bricked itself,” they wrote, later clarifying the front LED indicated what appeared to be a GPU error.
Steam’s support page describes several error light patterns, all denoted by a red line of varying length or position.
Valve support responded through its SteamHWFeedback Reddit account with a series of troubleshooting steps, explaining the problem was likely related to an incomplete BIOS update or memory training rather than a failed graphics processor.
The company recommended performing a CMOS reset and contacting Steam Support if the issue persisted.

Whether the user attempted the feedback provided isn’t clear, but they subsequently provided an update on the situation the day following their initial post.
“Today… it booted up immediately without issue,” they wrote in an update.
“I feel stupid about even posting this now, especially since it blew up a bit, but I was tired and irritable after a long day of work, and an ominous GPU error code wasn’t exactly the seamless plug-and-play experience I had hoped for.”

The user apologized for what they called a “false alarm,” thanking commenters for suggesting possible fixes and advising anyone who encounters the same error not to panic.
According to Steam’s official support documentation, different red LED patterns correspond to different hardware or firmware issues. Valve also noted in its Reddit reply that launch units mistakenly shipped with the front panel diagnostic guide mirrored, adding to the confusion when interpreting error codes.
It remains unclear how many Steam Machine owners experienced the same issue, but the update suggests at least some early “red line of death” reports may be recoverable without hardware replacement.
So far, Valve’s new device appears to have had a successful pre-launch period, with the tech selling out in Japan within hours of going on sale.
