«Sunday» says it can fix your lawn with just a subscription — I put it to the test

Summary follow Follow Thread Here is a fact-based summary of the story contents: Try something different:

When I moved into my home, the lawn was a major concern. It was overgrown in places, and there were a lot of weeds within the yard. Having done the grass at my home growing up, I was ready to tackle the issues head-on.

However, during my first two years at home, the lawn looked terrible, and I was just trying to keep up with mowing and pulling weeds. The patches of dead grass and bare areas became a focus of mine this year as I aimed to streamline the yard work as much as I could. That’s what led me to Sunday Lawn Care. The subscription service was slated to be catered to my specific lawn and help me grow beautiful grass to enjoy in my front yard and back. After one year, the results are mixed, but I feel optimistic.

Sunday takes your lawn into account

It builds me a plan based on my soil

Sunday handles pest control and lawn care products for homeowners who want to do their own yard work. Since I handle my own and don’t rely on a robotic mower or a pesticide company, I decided to give it a try. When you first sign up for Sunday, you’re asked for the specifics of your address and where you live. This gives Sunday an indication of the climate that you’re in and helps them tailor your plan to your specific needs. But not only are you asked about your yard and its measurements, but you are also sent a box to collect a soil sample.

It includes a small shovel that holds some dirt and a box for mailing it back to the company. You’re asked to take samples from different parts of your yard in order to give them a fuller analysis of the soil. It takes into account how much rock is in the soil and what kind of minerals are there.

This gives the company a profile of your grass and what it might need to get better. Sunday also asks you what your purpose for using it is. Do you want to grow your yard? Do you want to kill weeds? Do you want to treat pet urine spots? There are options for all of them.

After you receive your soil analysis from Sunday, it will provide you with options to reach your goal. This comes in the form of a customized plan along with the products it has for you to reach them. I was provided with fertilizer, a pet patch, pet repair, and more. You can choose either a liquid delivery system that you hook up to a hose and spray or a spread fertilizer that you pour into a spreader and walk around your yard. I chose the spreader and received a delivery in the spring.

Spreading Sunday products isn't hard

The customized plan gives you what you need

You can log into your Sunday account at any time, and it provides you with a checklist on when you should be using your products. Sunday’s big sales pitch is that it sends you the products, many of which are deemed safer than traditional fertilizers or weed killers, and that it generally would cost less than a traditional lawn service to come and spray your lawn.

I spread the fertilizer at the beginning of the spring and then set up my sprinkler to water the lawn a few times a week. I have a Rachio Smart Sprinkler controller, so I can schedule the days and times to sync up with the rain schedule, so I’m not overwatering or underwatering my lawn.

Do you want to grow your yard? Do you want to kill weeds? Do you want to treat pet urine spots? There are options for all of them.

While I did use the spreader for my fertilizer, I did get a spray for the Pet Patch product, which helps alleviate urine burn on the grass from my dog. There are a few patches of the yard that he tends to use in the backyard, so I used the sprayer for those, and it worked rather well to get rid of the dead grass look.

I noticed a difference during the summer

The grass looked healthier

The grass began to grow more rapidly, and it got long during the rainy spring months. During the summer this year, I noticed that there were fewer weeds mixed in with the grass in the front yard than in previous years. The front yard and backyard grow differently because of how many trees we have in the backyard and how much sun each of them gets.

While the patchiness of the front yard was alleviated a bit during the summer, it hasn’t grown quite as well as I’d hoped. I may need to water some areas extra next year, as I’m learning that every year, there’s a learning curve when it comes to owning a home.

As mentioned, my backyard has a lot of trees, so there are lots of large roots to contend with. Where the roots are and in the surrounding area of the trunk is where I noticed the least amount of grass growing. The other patchy areas of my backyard were pretty well fixed. As the summer went on though and into the fall, I received my second shipment of fertilizer to put down.

Sunday works year-round for your lawn

I didn't have to think about it

Sunday shipped me cooler weather fertilizer that is meant to help my lawn maintain itself through the winter months. The Core Seagreen fertilizer is designed for long-term resilience, helping your lawn with a protective barrier against the cold.

I poured it into the spreader and worked it onto the lawn, watering it for a few weeks until it was time to blow out the sprinklers for the season. By the time late fall came out, I noticed more patchiness in the yard. While my lawn has remained green in plenty of areas, even into December, there are more noticeable areas in both the front yard and back that are dead grass.

While I’m not quite sure what to do about those at this point in the year, as grass tends to die as the weather changes, I’m curious how a second year of Sunday will help my lawn. I’m excited to see how good my lawn will look in the spring, as I’m hopeful it will look better to start the year than it did last year, meaning that it could look fuller next year as the seasons move on.

I'm giving Sunday another shot

Sunday Lawn Care products have provided my lawn with a good facelift in their first year. While there are still some patches of dead grass that have crept up, I’m chalking some of that up to how much sun the lawn gets and how often I water it during the hot months. I noticed my weed problem in my grass had diminished mightily, saving me from having to pay a company to come and spray my lawn with extra chemicals. The fertilizer that I used included more organic weed killer, helping me feel better about having my dog and daughter run around on the lawn.

I really like that Sunday provides my products for me on a schedule, and I don’t have to think about when to go out and buy some. The fact that Sunday’s plan is customized to my lawn makes me intrigued about how it will go next year with another year of using it.
