WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Supergirl #2 (2025)!

Supergirl’s most controversial costume has officially made its comeback in mainstream continuity, and it’s one that probably should have stayed buried with the rest of her fashion misfires. But the real surprise isn’t just the return of one questionable look; it’s that all of Kara Zor-El’s most infamous costumes are back. After decades of being left in the past, the Maiden of Might is once again rocking every one of her most hotly debated outfits.

Sophie Campbell and Tamra Bonvillain’s brand-new Supergirl series returns with its second installment, picking up where the last issue left off as Kara Zor-El faces a case of mistaken identity. Golden Era villain Lesla-Lar receives a modern-day reimagining, resuming her role as Kara’s copycat enemy by posing as the one true Supergirl.

As part of her scheme, Lesla brainwashes Kara’s adoptive parents, the Danvers, into believing that she is their real daughter. She then fully takes over their home, making herself comfortable by throwing out all of Kara’s old Supergirl costumes, which Kara later finds discarded on the side of the street. After Lesla ruins Kara’s current costume, Kara decides to suit up in several of her former outfits.

ing a confrontation between Kara and Lesla, Lesla douses Kara’s Supergirl costume in an unidentified liquid that destroys it. Needing to regroup, figure out her next steps for taking down the imposter, and secure a new suit, Kara retreats to Lena Luthor’s base of operations in Midvale. There, the two form a truce and decide to work together. This unexpected moment of girl-bonding sparks an impromptu fashion show, with Kara trying on several of her old Supergirl costumes to choose a temporary replacement while her main suit gets repaired. Among the many outfits is the one she famously wore during Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985–1986), where she met her heroic end.

However, it is her most controversial costumes that truly steal the spotlight. Kara notably revisits several of her experimental looks from the 1970s, a time when DC launched an initiative inviting fans to submit their own Supergirl designs. A handful of these submissions were published and brought to life in her stories, resulting in costumes that ranged from stylishly groovy to utterly impractical. One of the most outrageous appeared in Adventure Comics #409 (1971), featuring a suit that barely clung to the front of her chest while leaving her back and sides completely exposed. And that was just one of several unforgettable fashion missteps she briefly brings back to life.

Among Kara’s returning suits are several memorable looks, including the distinctly 70s outfit she wore in Action Comics #399–406 (1970), her full-coverage suit from Action Comics #412–413 (1971), and another loud and vibrant 70s costume from Adventure Comics #415. Several other suits make an appearance as well, with the least visually offensive one likely being her blouse-and-shorts combo from 1974. This is ultimately the suit Kara chooses to wear as a temporary replacement while repairs are being made to her current continuity costume. For now, it looks like the 70s are here to stay, as there’s no word yet on when her usual Supergirl suit will return.
