The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

Fire Emblem is a series of tactical role-playing video games whose titles are largely developed by Intelligent Systems and are published by Nintendo, who have occasionally had a hand in the series’ development. Fire Emblem is a competitor of sorts to third-party RPG franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

Like either Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem is a fantastical video game franchise overall. Individual games in the series, including Path of Radiance and The Blazing Blade, are prime examples of this. It is the individual titles in the Fire Emblem series that help give it a good name.

10 Engage Is a Bit Engaging

Release Date — Jan. 20, 2023

  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

Fire Emblem Engage is the seventeenth installment in the Fire Emblem series; the game was published on the Nintendo Switch and, uncharacteristically for a second-party title, utilizes the Unity game engine over the usual proprietary video game engine. Fire Emblem Engage is set on the Elyos continent, which is divided into five regions for the player to explore. The game has Alear having to lead a war.

Fire Emblem Engage is the latest and, perhaps, not exactly the greatest entry in the Fire Emblem series. This can be blamed on the series’ move to a third-party video game engine, which causes the game to feel a little more generic than past installments. Still, Fire Emblem Engage is far from a bad game, with the game’s innovations making it very engaging to play.

9 Shadow Dragon Is Not Shady

Release Date — Feb. 16, 2009

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Nintendo DS

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is the eleventh installment in the Fire Emblem series that was published for the Nintendo DS. The game serves as a remake of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, the first installment in the Fire Emblem series. In Shadow Dragon, the player takes control of Marth, a brave warrior who has to take down the titular shadow dragon, who has just been resurrected.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is a fine remake of the first Fire Emblem game, allowing new generations of players to experience Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, which was never released outside Japan. On its own merits, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon proves itself to be a lot of fun, with various mechanics from the original game refined for the more modern gamers.

8 Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Echoes With Pride

Release Date — May 19, 2017

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Nintendo 3DS

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is the fifteenth installment in the Fire Emblem series; the game also serves as a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden, the second game in the series. Echoes: Shadows of Valentia stars a pair of childhood friends, Alm and Celica. The two must work together to bring down Duma and his cult, which has captivated the continent of Valentia and is threatening the world.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia, other than being a good remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden, is simply an enjoyable role-playing video game that takes good advantage of the Nintendo 3DS’s advanced hardware compared to what the original game was released on. Mainly, the dual-screen nature of the game allows for features such as a weapon wheel, making it easier to calculate how to attack certain enemies.

7 The Sacred Stones Is a Little Sacred

Release Date — May 23, 2005

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Game Boy Advance

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is the eighth entry in the Fire Emblem series, as well as the third entry released for the Game Boy Advance. The game is set roughly eight hundred years after a bloody conflict between humans and monsters. All that time later, that conflict appears to be brewing again, with the titular Sacred Stones at the forefront of this conflict.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is beloved for its characters, especially its protagonists Eirika and Ephraim. The pair, who are siblings in a ruling royal family, help compliment the game’s rich story and, more importantly, engaging gameplay. The gameplay in question was greatly refined from previous handheld entries and, indeed, the series in general, with greater levels of customization in battle and especially the presence of support in battle.

6 Path of Radiance Is Fairly Radiant

Release Date — Oct. 17, 2005

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): GameCube

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is the ninth entry in the Fire Emblem series, as well as the first to appear on a home Nintendo video game console outside Japan. The game takes place in Tellius, a continent that is facing an assault by a dark, nefarious force for the first time in about eight hundred years. It is up to Ike to stop this entity from wreaking havoc.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is noted for the introduction of full-motion video to the Fire Emblem series, helping to elaborate on the rich story that the game wishes to tell. Of course, this is nothing compared to the intricate gameplay, which feels more satisfying than on a handheld Nintendo video game console. Compared to earlier titles, the game takes a slower approach to its otherwise powerful action sequences.

5 Fates Is a Fateful Fire Emblem Game

Release Date — Feb. 19, 2016

  • Platform(s): Nintendo 3DS

Fire Emblem Fates is actually not one singular Fire Emblem game, but rather one with three variants, a la the Pokémon role-playing video game series. These variants are Birthright, Conquest and Revelation. Regardless of which version one chooses, the game’s premise otherwise remains the same. That said, it sees Corrin and his fellow warriors plotting to take down Anankos, who is spreading chaos throughout the world.

Fire Emblem Fates, with no given preference to any particular version of the game, is nonetheless a beautiful entry in the Fire Emblem series, being the fourteenth installment in said series. One particular stand-out feature is the touted ability to build armies, which allows the player to build forces that can easily take down even the toughest of bosses in the game. It is just a matter of how it is all applied.

4 Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade Is Blazing Sharply

Release Date — Nov. 3, 2003

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Game Boy Advance

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade is the seventh entry in the Fire Emblem series, as well as the first to be released outside Japan; this is some two years after Fire Emblem characters made their first international appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In this seminal release, which takes place twenty years after the preceding game, the player effectively plays God and commands warriors to take down the evil sorcerer Nergal.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade is a welcome introduction for international gamers to the world of Fire Emblem, and as for both novice and experienced fans of the series, there are plenty of additions to the formula to go around. For instance, and other than the added tutorials, the game has been made more accessible overall, even as more statistics are involved this time around.

3 Three Houses Is the Number Third Fire Emblem Game

Release Date — July 26, 2019

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the sixteenth entry in the Fire Emblem series, the first mainline entry released for the Nintendo Switch and the first entry to be released solely on the console. The game has a gender-determined mercenary, Byleth, finding themselves taking part in a war that has raged for centuries before they were around. They must join one of the factions and fight other factions.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is known for its branching stories, which are by means of having the player pick from one of the in-game factions to join. This allows for interesting scenarios to occur that depend on which side the player chooses, whether it be the Golden Deer, the Blue Lions, the Black Eagles, the Silver Snow or the Cindered Shadows. It will surely keep players busy for a long time.

2 Awakening Is a Waking Hour for the Series

Release Date — Feb. 4, 2013

The 10 Best Fire Emblem Games of All Time, Ranked

  • Platform(s): Nintendo 3DS

Fire Emblem Awakening is the thirteenth installment in the Fire Emblem series, as well as the first to be released for the Nintendo 3DS. The game takes place around over two thousand years after the first Fire Emblem game — Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light — and Fire Emblem Gaiden. That span of time has allowed for a new generation of warriors to take on nefarious forces.

Indeed, Fire Emblem Awakening is nothing short of grand on any front, with the game making both modifications to accommodate the 3DS’s capabilities and whole new additions to the standard Fire Emblem formula. This largely manifests in the character-building system, which helps to foster relations between each member of any given party. This makes Fire Emblem Awakening more modular than what previous entries were going for.

1 Thracia 776 Is That Percent Good

Release Date — Jan. 21, 2000

  • Platform(s): Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is the Japan-exclusive fifth installment in the Fire Emblem series, originally released through the equally Japan-exclusive Nintendo Power online service. It also happens to be among the last games released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or Super Famicom as it is called in Japan. Thracia 776 has Leif on the run from a war that has been going on since the last main entry.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is perhaps the best installment in the Fire Emblem series, which makes it all the more disappointing that the game never saw a release outside Japan outside of fan translations. The game is still well-regarded twenty-five years later for its innovations to the Fire Emblem formula, morbidly including the player character gradually losing strength as a battle against any given enemy goes on.
