For my money, the best starting weapon in Mina the Hollower is the Nightstar chain mace. There are a few reasons, but by far the most important is the weapon’s range.

Neither Whisper and Vesper nor the Blaststrike Maul has much range to speak of, meaning you will always need to be close to your enemy to deal damage. And in Mina the Hollower, enemies damage you whenever you touch them, so having even a few extra pixels between you and them is invaluable.

That’s doubly true as you progress through the story, where enemies get bigger and have attacks with wide areas of effect. The Nighstar provides the luxury of just a bit more distance between the edge of an AoE and safety, while still allowing you to deal decent damage fairly quickly.

Much of this calculus changes as you get better at the game. Whisper and Vesper have a higher potential DPS given the speed of their attacks. The Blatstrike Maul’s slam is incredibly satisfying, and used correctly can equal or possibly exceed the dual daggers.
