Amazon’s hit superhero series The Boys will conclude with its upcoming fifth season. There is undoubtedly a lot of pressure on the show’s team to deliver a finale that will satisfy the fans, and they’ve looked back at one of the most revered in TV history for inspiration.

Per Sony, The Boys showrunner and series developer Eric Kripke recently commented on the upcoming final season. He confirmed he is concerned about not being able to stick the landing, as so few shows have had a finale that’s been universally praised by fans and critics. Conversely, there are countless shows with series finales that have been heavily criticized. Feeling that Breaking Bad particularly stands out as a great TV show with a perfect ending, Kripke said he spoke with some of the writers of that hit AMC series for tips on how to properly wrap the story up.

“I am in a fair amount of terror about a series finale,” Kripke explained. “You can count in one, maybe two hands, the truly great series finales. Of which, by the way, well done, I think The Shield is one of them. And, conversely, the graveyard is literally filled with terrible [finales]. You could have the greatest show for years, but if you stiff that ending, and that’s what’s sending everyone out in the parking lot, they go, ‘Oh, maybe that show wasn’t that good.’ How do you tie up the stories? How do you do it in a way that is emotional and satisfying? How do you do it in a way that creates, frankly, the illusion that some detail that you dropped in Season 1 or Season 2 is now suddenly coming back to pay off?»

Breaking Bad, to me, is as good as a show gets.

Kripke continued, «Breaking Bad, to me, is as good as a show gets, and I was able to ask some of those writers, ‘The way you tied everything together, how did you do that?’ And they said, ‘Oh, we just had a list of loose ends on our board, that we had no idea of what to do with them, that we would keep compiling over the seasons, and when then it was time to do the final season we would just start checking them off, because we are going to look like geniuses because the Season 2 storyline becomes this.’ So that, I would say, has been a big challenge. The size of it, you know?»

The Boys Franchise Will Continue After the Main Series Ends

The Boys has found a lot of success with several Emmy Award nominations and very high streaming viewership. It has even spawned a franchise which will continue to live on after The Boys ends with Season 5. This includes the spinoff series, Gen V, which has a second season debuting this September. There’s also a prequel series in the works featuring Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash’s Stormfront.

The first four seasons of The Boys are streaming on Prime Video; Season 5 does not yet have a premiere date.
