The next Matrix movie just dropped its first substantial update in years. Writer-director Drew Goddard has confirmed that The Matrix 5 is still very much still happening and he’s deep into the writing process.
The series, which originally wrapped up with 2003’s Matrix: Revolutions, was rebooted in 2021 in the form of The Matrix Resurrections – a box-office and critical flop that proved to be even more polarizing than the first two sequels.
A fifth Matrix movie was first announced back in 2024 with Warner Bros executive Jesse Ehrman explaining that the story “will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.”
Not much else is known about the movie, including whether or not Keanu Reeves or Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. However, we now have an update about where the film stands, and despite the radio silence, it’s still in the early stages, but actively being worked on.

Goddard, known for The Cabin in the Woods and his work on Project Hail Mary, confirmed to ScreenRant that he’s still working on the script.
“I’m in my writing cave writing,” he said. “I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”
This marks a notable shift for the franchise. The upcoming fifth entry is the first live-action Matrix film not directed solely by The Wachowskis, though Lana Wachowski remains involved in an executive producer role.
Little else is confirmed so far. There’s no official word on a release date or which cast members might return. After the mixed reception to The Matrix Resurrections, fan interest is high but tentative.

For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: Matrix 5 isn’t dead. It’s being actively written and shaped by Goddard, and more news should follow once he emerges from that “writing cave.” This will also be the first theatrical Matrix film not to be directed by the Wachowskis, who worked on the original three before Lana took the reins on the fourth entry.
