Stanley Kubrick‘s Eyes Wide Shut has been fueling conspiracy theories for years. The speculations surrounding the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman-led starrer have only garnered more traction in recent years, particularly in light of Jeffrey Epstein‘s scandal. Now, coming back to the movie, while it does address the s-xual hypocrisy of elites, who operate with absolute impunity, the heart of the story lies in the dysfunctional marriage of Alice and Bill.
Moreover, since Kubrick intertwined their real-life marriage to explore themes of infidelity, jealousy, and s-xual desire, Cruise later admitted he was grateful the movie wasn’t made during the early years of their marriage (via Roger Ebert).
I’m glad Nic and I didn’t make this movie in the first or second year of our marriage. The stuff we were talking about, confronting together with Stanley, was volatile and intense. The characters are very much at odds. When you’re talking about jealousy or raw emotions that bring men to their knees at times, it can be crippling.
While Christopher Nolan went on to describe the movie as the 2001 of relationships (via Collider), the current discourse surrounding the movie tends to focus on its critique of the moral decay behind closed doors. Coupled with the current climate, particularly in the wake of the Epstein scandal, it’s easy to see why the movie has witnessed a resurgence, especially given the conspiracy theories that have surrounded it.

Did Eyes Wide Shut Predict the Jeffrey Epstein Scandal

It’s easy to see where this consensus stems from, as the parallels between powerful figures in New York City who took part in s-xual exploitation behind closed doors from the movie and Jeffrey Epstein’s island scandal. However, it’s important to note that in Epstein’s case, the victims were economically vulnerable women and children who were preyed upon and viewed as disposable by the powerful figures who made up this illicit racket.
Considering that few perpetrators were meaningfully punished, despite alleged links to many elite figures, it is understandable why comparisons are drawn to Eyes Wide Shut, which depicts a world where powerful elites are untouched by accountability.
Why Eyes Wide Shut is Now Linked to Epstein List After 27 Years
The entire Epstein saga, coupled with the recent unsealed files, has once again reignited debate around its possible parallels. Long-standing conspiracies have speculated that Kubrick might have been attempting to expose elite power structures through his work. And Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary’s resurfaced comments regarding the movie’s alleged scrapped ending have further reinforced these ideas among conspiracy theorists.

According to the writer, WB allegedly scrapped Kubrick’s supposed original vision, which apparently included a pedophile ring, and the ending allegedly alluded to Alice and Bill sacrificing their daughter at the end of the movie. While horrifying due to how prevalent it feels to the entire Epstein scandal, there’s nothing concrete to go by to cement these claims as definitive.
Avary alleged (via The Joe Rogan Experience):
There’s an entire thread that’s been squashed in that film and that’s the the two men who follow Cruise throughout the movie, that are constantly in the background of the film, who eventually in the final shots of the film you see Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in that final scene in the toy store when she’s looking at the Rosemary’s Baby bassinet, which is totally Kubrick saying something, and the final line of the movie is coming up, you see those two guys walking off with the daughter. They’re taking her away, [Cruise and Kidman] have given their daughter to the pedo cult. That’s what was supposed to happen at the end of the movie.
Furthermore, in more extreme speculations, some have even linked the auteur’s death to alleged retribution by powerful elites.
How Did Stanley Kubrick Die: Death Before Eyes Wide Shut
Kubrick died on March 7, 1999, less than a week after screening the final cut of the movie to WB. To clarify, however, there is zero evidence suggesting that the auteur was murdered or that any form of foul play was involved. Take note that Kubrick, throughout his life, was a heavy smoker and worked under immense stress in his pursuit of perfection with every shot.

The post-mortem examination after his passing concluded that Kubrick, at the age of 70, died of natural causes after suffering a heart attack in his sleep, and neither his loved ones nor close collaborators indicated any suspicion (via Associated Press).
It is also worth noting that the production of Eyes Wide Shut was relatively calm, despite lasting over 400 days. Kubrick had approximately 18 months to edit the movie and was said to have successfully delivered the final cut to Warner Bros shortly before his passing. Warner Bros has denied any foul play regarding alleged cuts to the movie, and members of the cast and crew, including Nicole Kidman, have stressed that the released version reflects Kubrick’s final vision.
Truth or Fiction: What The Internet Thinks About Kubrick’s Death?
As discussed before, a substantial portion of netizens believe Kubrick was murdered as a form of retribution for allegedly exposing the dark secrets of an elite group. And the revelation of Epstein’s horrors has only amplified this sentiment across the web.

However, the pattern of powerful elites using their influence to shield themselves from moral accountability while engaging in illicit acts is not a new concept. Eyes Wide Shut itself is based on Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Traumnovelle, which explores similar themes. The uncomfortable truth is s-xual exploitation at the hands of elites is not exclusive to the Epstein scandal. It didn’t start with the convicted s-x offender, and unfortunately, it won’t end with him either, given the state of the world.
Confining Kubrick’s masterpiece to the exposure of a single alleged ring diminishes its broader significance. It doesn’t appear the auteur was eying to expose any particular s-x ring, but confront the ugly pattern that has persisted throughout history, and continues to exist in the modern world.
It’s easy to see why the movie’s stature has grown in recent years. With so little accountability in the Epstein case beyond a few names, Eyes Wide Shut feels eerily relevant, and the frustration among the public is entirely justified.
