Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Pitt season 2, episode 1.Even though Dr. Robby’s (Noah Howell) official replacement has already made a big splash in The Pitt season 2, the HBO Max medical drama has also introduced his real successor. The Pitt season 2, episode 1 introduced Robby’s replacement at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center: Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi). While Al-Hashimi is taking Robby’s job for some months, The Pitt also set up another contender to be the «new Robby.»
Most of the entire cast of The Pitt has been taught by Robby, and most of them could theoretically fill the role he plays at PTMC. There are other attending physicians, like Dr. Abbot, who could make really compelling main characters. Dr. Al-Hashimi also proves that The Pitt could simply bring in a new character to replace Robby, if the need ever arose. However, The Pitt season 2 also set up one existing character to do just that.
Whitaker Is Already Being Set Up As The New Dr. Robby, Not Dr. Al-Hashimi

Even though Dr. Al-Hashimi is literally Dr. Robby’s replacement — she’s filling in for him while Robby goes on a sabbatical — she’s only filling his role as attending physician. There’s another doctor who’s much better poised to being Dr. Robby’s successor, and The Pitt season 2, episode 1 made it clear that’s Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell). Al-Hashimi may have Robby’s job, but Whitaker is carrying on Robby’s entire ethos.
Robby and Al-Hashimi couldn’t be more different. Robby is a traditionalist, Al-Hashimi prefers technology and safer procedures. Robby likes to let his students learn by coming up with their own plans, while Al-Hashimi is much more hands-on. Again, Al-Hashimi has Robby’s job, but she’s not even close to being his replacement. Whitaker, while still a resident, is much closer to that replacement.
In The Pitt season 2, episode 1, Robby briefly saw Whitaker lead his interns in a moment of silence after they lost a patient, a practice Robby taught him in season 1. Whitaker and Robby also had a moment in season 1 where they exchanged words of spiritualism, and Whitaker even comforted Robby during his breakdown. Whitaker has the same respect for tradition and the reverent sense of spiritualism that Robby does, and he’s much better poised to be the «new Robby» in all the ways that matter.
Whitaker's Similarities To Robby Could Put Him In A Bad Spot With Al-Hashimi

Unfortunately for Whitaker, his similarities to Robby could put him in hot water with Dr. Al-Hashimi and the change in leadership at PTMC. As mentioned earlier, Robby and Al-Hashimi are butting heads constantly. He doesn’t like the changes she’s implementing in the hospital, she doesn’t like his cavalier, hands-off attitude, and there’s clearly a big difference of opinion between the two at a fundamental level.

Even if Robby and Al-Hashimi don’t grow to outright hate each other by the end of The Pitt season 2 — which is entirely possible — the differences she has with Robby are bad news for Whitaker. Al-Hashimi clearly doesn’t have the respect for tradition that Whitaker does, and some of the changes she implements in the next three months may get under Whitaker’s skin. If he speaks up about it, like Robby would, Al-Hashimi may not be happy with him.

Whitaker is thriving under Robby’s leadership. He’s already noticeably more confident, more collected, and simply a better doctor than he was in The Pitt season 1. That growth may not continue under Dr. Al-Hashimi, especially if he’s as aligned with Robby’s views and values as he seems. I don’t think Al-Hashimi would target Whitaker, but I also don’t think he’s going to enjoy ing who is so different from Robby after The Pitt season 2.
