What a weird console generation this is turning out to be. Having launched in November 2020, usually a console such as the PS5 would have had a price reduction or two nearly five years on. Instead, from today, it’s more expensive to own a PS5 than ever if you live in Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
In any case, it means that a PS5 Digital Edition console is now €499.99 across Europe and £429.99 in the UK, though the price of the Standard Edition console with a disc drive remains the same. In Australia, a Digital Edition PS5 is now AUD$794.95, with the Standard Edition increasing to $829.95. And in New Zealand a Digital Edition PS5 is NZD$859.95, with the Standard Edition now costing $949.95.
The silver lining in all this, if you really need to clutch for one, is that the price of the disc drive has now been reduced. From today, it’s now €79.99 across Europe, £69.99 in the UK, $124.95 in Australia, and $139.95 in New Zealand. Thanks to the price of the PS5 Pro remaining the same, then, it’s now cheaper than ever to own one of those with a disc drive.
Of course, while the price of the PS5 has risen officially in these regions, retailers are pretty much free to sell them for whatever they want. And so, in the UK, you can still buy a Digital Edition PS5 for the old RRP of £389.99 on Amazon, and other deals can be found elsewhere.
