As the star of Madame Web, Dakota Johnson endured some heavy criticism leveled against the doomed Sony movie upon release last year. Her role in the movie even resulted in Johnson being given a «Razzie,» a parody award bestowed upon the «worst» movies and performances each year.

Recently, Johnson appeared as a guest for the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast. The subject of Madame Web‘s rough reviews came up, and Johnson shared how, after she was declared a Razzie winner, she was contacted by Sandra Bullock for support. For her part, Bullock was already part of the «Razzie Club» after getting one for Worst Actress in 2010 for her role in the panned romantic comedy All About Steve. It seemingly softened the blow of getting a Razzie for Johnson, who was stoked to hear from such an «iconic» movie star during that rough patch.

I was like, ‘Oh my god.’

Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, connected to Morbius, Kraven, and the Venom movies. It serves as an origin story for Cassie Webb (Johnson), who serves to help three young women (Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor) become Spider-Women while thwarting the sinister Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). Adam Scott, Mike Epps, and Emma Roberts also starred.

To put it lightly, Madame Web was not a success. It made just over $100 million at the worldwide box office, making it a money-loser, given its $80 million budget with added marketing costs. It was also given a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 11% from critics, making it among the lowest-rated comic book movies ever. Making the reception worse was the film winning three Razzies: Worst Actress for Johnson, Worst Picture, and Worst Screenplay.

Dakota Johnson Says It's Not Her Fault

“It wasn’t my fault,” Johnson recently told The Los Angeles Times about Madame Web bombing. “There’s this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body. And it’s really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way.»

She added, «I think, unfortunately, with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.”

Madame Web is streaming on Netflix.
