Insiders say Valve is using canary traps to hide the real Half-Life 3 reveal date as rumors point to an 2025 announcement.

Half-Life 3 has been a name that sends the gaming community into a frenzy at the mere mention. And here we are on December 2, 2025, with the game being the closest it’s ever been to being revealed. We’ve gotten a number of recent reports regarding a 2025 announcement and 2026 release for Valve’s highly anticipated game. But why are there so many different dates?
There is an unmistakable feeling that something is coming. What with the recent hardware reveals, insider reports, and full-on Hopium from fans. But it seems like Valve is keeping the reveal date to itself and feeding fake dates to insiders in an attempt to catch whoever leaks it.
Valve Is the Reason Why Insiders Are Hearing Different Dates

We’ve heard rumors regarding Half-Life 3 throughout the year, but things really went to the next level last month. In late November, several insiders reported that a Half-Life 3 announcement was still coming before the end of 2025.
I've been asked so much. The date I was told hasn't passed yet, though not being able to get at least 2 other people to verify it has me really thinking Valve did have multiple dates to "catch leakers".
Announcement date aside, source still believes it'll be announced this year…

One of them was Mike Straw of Insider Gaming, who said he had been given a date, but he refused to publish it. Not because it lacked credibility, but because he suspected Valve was trying to trap someone. He explained this further in an episode of the Insider Gaming podcast.
I have a date that I’ve been told, but I haven’t been able to verify it with multiple sources, and there is a history of Valve doing these things called ‘canary traps’. They give different people different dates to try and guess who’s talking.. They did this with Half-Life: Alyx. A bunch of people reported different dates.
The secrecy doesn’t stop at the dates either. Sean Hollister from The Verge attended recent hands-on sessions for the newly announced Steam Machine hardware and noticed a surprising amount of security. Far more than what was present at previous events by the company.

Half-Life 3 Might Still Be Revealed Soon, Even With Delays

All of this means that there’s not a lot of time left. With Valve’s staff preparing for their yearly winter break in mid-December and The Game Awards set for December 11, there aren’t many days left for a reveal. And while Geoff Keighley has been dropping his usual cryptic teasers, it is a bit doubtful that the company would choose to reveal it at TGA.
I hope the Half Life 3 rumors are legit.

If anything, we could probably expect them to announce the game on their own and then show additional footage during the event. Of course, all of this also arrives with the arrival of new hardware, as previously mentioned. Valve recently announced the Steam Machine, a new controller, and the Steam Frame VR headset. And this is a bigger deal than you might think.
Console and hardware developers have historically paired hardware launches with exclusive games. We saw the same happen with Half-Life: Alyx and the Index VR Headset. So maybe there’s some truth to these rumors because the Steam Machine is coming next year. Maybe it’ll release with HL3.
