Not many series are as beloved and tenured as the Transformers universe. For decades, the Autobots and Decepticons have thrived within the realm of toys, movies, shows, and, of course, video games. With multiple different video games under the belt of the brand, it only makes sense that people have picked out a few that they love.
The series will probably always be recognizable and beloved, because come on. They're transforming robots. They will never not be cool. While the series isn't immune to having a few lackluster titles, even those that aren’t universally loved have some seriously die-hard fans.
Updated June 23, 2024 by Armaan Ali: The Transformers universe has constantly been growing, with old and new games constantly coming to light. As such, this list has been updated to discuss even more games, while also tackling the changes the previous games have gone through.
11 Transformers: Dark Of The Moon
This one's a bit more of a divisive title within the series. It's still a fun game tackling transforming robots that battle one another, but Dark of the Moon is not the best of the best. Some frame rate issues and a smaller-scaled world leave the game feeling compact.
Adding to that is the fact that the game is an incredibly short experience, and not necessarily one that should have been as simplistic as it was. Despite that, there is still a lot of fun to be had playing both the Decepticons and the Autobots, with an all-star cast of voice actors.
10 Transformers: The Game
This one makes it onto the list due to Transformers: The Game being the first movie tie-in video game in the series. It's not a perfect game, but it's one that started the movie tie-in Bayformers games, and a nostalgic classic for many fans.
Though the controls aren't perfect, the destructible environments, unique levels, and large roster are great additions to the game. Alongside the fantastic extra content, such as the unique G1 skins and open world areas, this game is the one that started it all.
9 Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
The Transformers games had a period of struggle when it comes to capturing the reverence of reviewers, and this game was no different. However, it did have some redeeming qualities. An exciting and action-packed multiplayer scene alongside a fun roster of characters makes this a fun time.
You won’t be getting in-depth mechanics and revolutionary game design, but you will be getting a competent action shooter that lets you take control of your favorite transforming robots. Even if it’s not the prettiest or most visually interesting game, it is enjoyable.
8 Transformers Animated: The Game
There are a lot of people who will remember this game as one of the better handheld Transformers games. Rather than featuring plenty of action on the Nintendo DS, this game opts for a different approach, as it uses and showcases plenty of puzzles within the gameplay.
Each Transformer has a different strength and ability, allowing players to feel like they're controlling different characters, rather than reskins of the same one. Transformers Animated is a massively underrated version of the crew, resulting in a fun, adventurous game.
7 Transformers Prime: The Game
This Wii game was made in tandem with the fantastic animated series, and the gameplay is actually a bit simpler than many of the other games on this list. Despite that simplicity, the game is still a ton of fun to battle through.
With a multiplayer mode and stats for various missions, even someone who finds the experience easy has reason to keep coming back to it. At the end of the day, if you want a fun little story featuring plenty of Autobot action, it’s hard to do better than this game.
6 Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark
This entry is one of the more underappreciated ones on this list. Connecting with the film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Rise of the Dark Spark instead offers a different storyline, tackling both ravaged and war-torn versions of Earth and Cybertron.
Most people point out the multiplayer limitations, which is fair, but they ignore how fantastic the game is on a visual level. Additionally, not enough credit goes into just how interesting the story of the game was, making it an entry that fans should definitely revisit.
5 Transformers: Forged To Fight
The support for this fantastic mobile game came to an end, but recently, it returned to the land of the living thanks to Netflix. It was a thrilling little action RPG experience that any Transformers fan could have on the go.
The game had a grand story, plenty of missions, simple controls, multiple classes, and tons of characters. Fans of the series probably loved seeing just how many unique Transformers ended up in the game. Anyone who managed to play the game while it was live will know just how much fun it was.
4 Transformers: War For Cybertron
This excellent entry in the series was followed up with the equally excellent Fall Of Cybertron, and both games shook up the world of Transformers games. Both featured sprawling stories and plenty of high-paced action.
War for Cybertron lets players experience stories from both the Decepticon and Autobot points of view, allowing you to come to grips with fluid controls and Cybertronian lore. Setting a title during the Transformers’ most famed and tragic war was a stroke of genius, and fans absolutely loved it.
3 Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron
When it comes to fan-favorite Transformer games, there's a reason that a lot of people point to this title. When the biggest complaint most can muster about it is that the story takes its time at points, Transformers fans will definitely be safe picking this one up.
Fall of Cybertron served as a major step up for the overall gameplay of the series, something that seemed like a seriously good sign for future games. Fall for Cybertron is the tragic conclusion to the Cybertronian saga, one that pushes the war between Autobots and Decepticons onto Earth.
2 Transformers (PS2)
For a lot of people, this PS2 game was and potentially still is the best, most essential Transformers game ever made. While the story isn’t anything ground-breaking for fans of the series, the gameplay has a lot to love.
The playable roster wasn’t exactly massive, but the challenge and the fun story that the game offered were enough to keep people pushing on to the end. Each stage requires different strategies and abilities, making it so that each player may decide upon their own unique set of skills to finish tough challenges.
1 Transformers: Devastation
Rather than trying to create a complex third-person shooter, Devastation decided that a simple action game approach was much better. The result is a beautiful and classic-looking game, one with a very G1 animated style and design for the roster of characters.
This flashy game is loved by fans for its simple but fun gameplay, and unique attack combinations. It's bold, it's shiny, it's colorful, and it's got a vintage '80s aesthetic that any Transformers fan can appreciate. Alongside the simple but fun story, Devastation is an absolute gem of a game.
