Virtual Reality games are often challenging enough due to their unique controls and mechanics, but some developers choose to go the extra length with them and make them even tougher. Whether it be through extremely tough bosses, very hard mechanics, or a lot of physical movement, some VR games are tough to play and almost impossible to master.
This article will list some of the hardest VR games we have come across, what they are about, and what makes them so hard. We will also try to cover a variety of genres, so there is something for everyone.
8 Until You Fall
- Genre: Fighting
- Developer: Schell Games
Until You Fall is a sword-fighting game that mixes elements of a roguelike, fantasy, and synthwave. This is one of the best implementations of virtual reality we have ever seen, and its combat mechanics are simple to pick up but almost impossible to master. Its bosses are also incredibly tough to deal with in the hardest difficulties, and you might spend hours getting stuck in some boss fights.
Although it may be one of the least difficult games on this list, you should still try out Until You Fall anyway due to how amazing it is in terms of its visuals as well as its gameplay.
7 iRacing
- Genre: Racing
- Developer: iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations
Most racing simulator games are tough enough by themselves, but playing them on VR adds another challenge. iRacing is one of if not the best and most in-depth racing sims out there, which means you will need to learn a lot of stuff even before you can get your car to move.
Getting used to the VR headset in a racing environment can also be tough for some players. The increased field of view does make the game more realistic, but it also makes it a little bit too immersive, which can be difficult to deal with at first.
6 After The Fall
After the Fall
FPSVirtual Reality Developer(s) Vertigo Games
After You Fall is a zombie survival game completely designed for virtual reality. This game has some of the most realistic shooting mechanics of any VR game, and its waves of zombies are extremely hard to deal with, especially on higher difficulties.
Like most zombie games, After You Fall also requires a lot of running and moving around, which can make the VR experience even harder. It can also be quite terrifying to be chased by large packs of more than 20 fast zombies as you somehow try to shoot them all down and survive.
5 Gorilla Tag
Gorilla Tag
PlatformerParty GameVirtual Reality Developer(s) Another Axiom
Although Gorilla Tag is mostly meant to be a kid's game, it contains some of the hardest mechanics we have come across in VR. You take the form of a gorilla in this game, and you move around solely by waving your hands around like a real gorilla would.
You can also climb up surfaces and swing off things, although that requires exceptional control of the mechanics, which takes some practice. There are also a lot of fun and exciting game modes you can try out in Gorilla Tag, such as an Infection mode, Simple Tag, and even a Paintball mode.
4 Sprint Vector
- Genre: Platformer
- Developer: Survios
Sprint Racer is a multiplayer game that lets you experience intense parkour in virtual reality. You get to compete against other players in high-speed races across 12 different maps, consisting of obstacles, power-ups, and jumps that test your platforming skills to their limits.
You run around in this game by moving your arms back and forth, which may sound easy but can be really tough to master, especially when you're competing with other players. If you haven't figured it out by now, Sprint Vector also tests your cardio, and many races can leave you drenched in sweat due to how fast-paced this game is.
3 Compound
- Genre: Indie/Action
- Developer: Bevan McKechnie
Compound's retro art style may not be for everyone, especially in virtual reality, but its roguelite gameplay is very challenging and a lot of fun. The core gameplay revolves around taking down enemies by using a variety of weapons and avoiding their attacks, and while that may sound simple, it really isn't, and you will have to do some levels over and over again to make progress.
This game brands itself as one for VR veterans, which means you will need to have some prior VR shooting experience if you want to stand a chance against the ridiculously tough opponents you come across.
2 Into the Radius
Into The Radius
FPSSurvivalHorror Developer CM Games
Into The Radius is one of the most immersive survival games ever made. This game puts you in a dystopian world where you have to survive against a bunch of terrifying creatures by shooting through them using your large assortment of weapons.
Some of the other challenges Into The Radius presents are in terms of exploration, as you will need to understand how to use the realistic map to navigate around the large world while always being on the lookout for enemies.
1 Thrill of the Fight
Thrill Of The Fight
FightingActionSportSimulation Developer Sealost Interactive LLC
The Thrill of the Fight is not only one of the most fun fighting games on VR but also one of the most challenging. You play the role of a boxer in this game as you fight through increasingly difficult challengers to become the best in the world.
What makes this game so hard is how much physical activity it requires. Even a couple of rounds against a fighter can be enough to tire you out and make you sweat, but that's also what makes it so fun. From the correct punching technique to mastering your footwork, this is as as you can get to real-life boxing without stepping foot in the ring.
