It might be hard to believe, but Assassin's Creed is sufficiently old enough that its older titles can be considered retro. That's because the first Assassin's Creed game debuted all the way back in 2007. More so, with the series having over two dozen entries, including spin-offs and one-off mobile titles, it can be easy to forget the franchise's humble social stealth beginnings.
That said, while 2023's Assassin's Creed: Mirage was a return to the series' roots, fans can expect a proper return to the franchise's start in the future. Because, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, numerous Asssassin's Creed remakes are slated for release in the near future. What those remakes are remains to be seen, though rumors of an Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag remake swirled a while back.
Ubisoft Will Modernize Older Assassin's Creed Titles
In an interview published on Ubisoft's website, Guillemot touched on a number of topics, including the future of Ubisoft, as well as games as a service titles. Among those topics was the future of Assassin's Creed, which is set to debut a new entry later this year in the shape of Assassin's Creed Shadows.
As it turns out, Ubisoft is looking just as much towards the past as it is to the future when it comes to its marquee franchise. More so, the gaming giant is looking to diversify how Assassin's Creed titles play. Here's what Guillemot had to say:
Firstly, players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich. Secondly, to answer your question, there will be plenty of experience variety. The goal is to have Assassin's Creed games come out more regularly, but not for it to be the same experience every year. There are a lot of good things to come, including Assassin's Creed Hexe, which we've announced, which is going to be a very different game from Assassin's Creed Shadows. We're going to surprise people, I think.
Based off his response, it's safe to assume that anything pre-Assassin's Creed Unity is a safe bet to get the modernization treatment. That would include titles, like the first Assassin's Creed, its sequel Assassin's Creed 2, as well as Brotherhood and Revelations. While almost all the past titles have been remastered and released for modern consoles via the Ezio Collection and other similar projects, it's clear that Ubisoft has bigger plans.
Guillemot's words would line up with rumors of a Black Flag remake from 2023. Back then, it was reported that a Black Flag remake was in the early stages of development, and that Ubisoft Singapore was heavily involved. Then, in 2024, a second remake was rumored to be in the works, though what that title was had not been revealed.
Still, given how Ubisoft's planned remakes for both Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell have been going, it's safe to assume that these titles might be a bit of a way off. That said, a Black Flag remake with Skull and Bones naval combat would certainly be a treat. As would a modern take on the iconic Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
