Learn how to beat Filro the Forgotten in Baldur’s Gate 3!
The Underdark is a region known well in Baldur's Gate 3 for being an unforgiving, cruel environment. While it can bode well for adventurers desperate to avoid the grasp of The Absolute or the Shadow-Cursed Lands, it still deserves its harsh reputation, not only for its countless enemies, but its tendency to drive its residents mad.
Filro the Forgotten is a prime example of both of these threats. Once a drow denizen of the Underdark, he has gone mad over the years and now attacks anything that moves. Well, besides his "lovely" hook horrors. Talk about a face only a mother could love. While Filro the Forgotten's fight isn't particularly hard, it is certainly a surprising encounter, so being prepared is the key to defeating him swiftly.
Where To Find Filro The Forgotten
Filro the Forgotten is a "hidden" boss in the Underdark, near the Sussur Tree. He can be found at a small encampment on top of a rocky outlook at X: -57 Y: -163 (or around there; he does wander the area). This location is near the Underdark — Sussur Tree waypoint.
If you have the quest " Finish The Masterwork Weapon ," Filro can be found near the questmarker.
Defeating The Hook Horrors
Before getting to Filro the Forgotten, there is a good chance you'll run into hook horrors; monstrosities with sharp beaks and curved blades for hands, and defeating them in smaller groups is the best way to do it. The first hook horror you'll likely run into is located near the Sussur Tree waypoint (X: -39, Y: -122), and you can swiftly defeat this one while it is alone.

The other hook horrors will not join combat as long as you don't roam too far, so you can avoid them for now. You can also entirely avoid combat with the hook horror by sneaking past them or going invisible. However, they are not too difficult to defeat, so keep pummeling them and you should be fine!
If you have the Hunting Shortbow or Gandrel's Aspiration , make sure to equip it to gain Advantage on attacks against Monstrosities.
Fighting Filro The Forgotten
With the first hook horror taken care of, you are now ready to fight Filro; he will be automatically hostile, so there is no way to avoid combat with him once you get enough. Combat will start near the base of the stone steps (around X -50, Y -145).
Filro will enter combat along with one hook horror. He is a 5th-level spellcaster, with access to spells from the Wizard spell list.

Quarterstaff |
Filro will begin combat by casting Hypnotic Pattern on as many of your party members as he can. For this reason, you will want to spread out so fewer of your party members are in the range of Filro's AOE spells.
You can recruit Sovereign Glut from the Myconid Colony before going on this quest. Gut can be a powerful ally in this fight , and his Animating Spores can give you another allied party member in the fight.
Dealing With Hypnotic Pattern
Hypnotic Pattern is a dangerous spell, not only because it makes you unable to control party members, but because those affected will automatically fail on the hook horror's Pounce saving throw.
The two ways to rid yourself of the hypnotism are to break Filro's concentration or to take damage. If you can't reach Filro, it may finally be time to stab a party member, or you could use the Help action, it's your choice.
After he casts Hypnotic Pattern his first turn, Filro will switch to using Mirror Image. Once Mirror Image is up, he will Misty Step into melee and blast your party with Thunderwave to knock them back.
Once his higher-level slots are burned, he will use Tasha's Hideous Laughter or Sleep to knock party members prone so the hook horror gets its Multiattack. Lastly, he will sling Fire Bolts at party members from a range.
There is a chance Filro will run or Misty Step onto the tree branch if it gives him more opportunity to attack party members. Make sure to be mobile and keep your eye out for climbable terrain to reach him easily if he tries to run.
The Hook Horror
Filro does enter combat with one hook horror nearby him. The hook horror is not particularly difficult, but it can summon its allies with its Echoes in the Dark ability, so take it out quickly, but prioritize Filro.
To make sure Filro doesn't get any unnecessary allies, try to keep combat on the stone steps and in Filro's encampment. If you stay within the area pictured above, no other hook horror allies will join combat, unless Echoes in the Dark successfully goes off.
Using The Sussur Flower
Or, you could stop Filro from casting altogether; his location makes it very easy to use the Sussur Flower against him. These Sussur Flowers can be found on the Sussur Tree nearby and create an antimagic field whenever someone is carrying one or a nearby one.
Simply place a Sussur Flower on one of your non-casting party members and get them as to Filro as possible to inflict him with the antimagic field.
Using the antimagic properties of the Sussur Flower against Filro throws off his strategy, as he relies heavily on his casting. Once nearby, Filro will resort to using his quarterstaff on the party member in melee.
The Sussur Flower's antimagic field will also affect your casting party members . Make sure they are out of melee range of the flower so they can be at peak performance.
Once Filro is unable to cast, it is easy to take him out. He hardly deals any damage with his quarterstaff, and can easily be surprise attacked if you went invisible or taken out by melee fighters.
As long as your casters are out of range of the Sussur Flower effects and your melee fighters are up and personal with Filro, taking him out is no problem at all.
Although Filro is on a cliff and pushing him is tempting, we do not recommend this option , as it will put him out of range of the Sussur Flower and bring another hook horror into combat . The fall damage will not be enough to kill him unless he is already low on health .
Rewards
Defeating Filro the Forgotten will give you access to his inventory, which contains a few low-level scrolls, his quarterstaff, and his robes. More significantly, Filro has two quest items used to wrap up other storylines and obtain powerful weapons.
The letter on Filro's body and the one on the ground in his camp contains clues for how to use the Adamantine Forge. Meanwhile, the Icy Crystal is one of three items used to craft Mourning Frost.
The hook horrors also have Hooks on them, which is an alchemical item that can be used to craft Elixirs of Vigilance, so make sure to grab those as well!
