Psychopaths are very unique boss encounters in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, having Frank West square off against formidable and absolutely unhinged humans that have lost their way during the outbreak. While most will be a one-on-one battle, some will run in groups, which can make things much harder.
Speaking of which, the Hall Family is a family of three that utilize their hunting skills to snipe anyone and anything they deem a threat, placing Frank West between a rock and a hard place when he comes across them. This is one of the more challenging encounters in the game, so be prepared for a battle!
How To Find The Hall Family
The Hall Family is a formidable Psychopath encounter that becomes available during the second day of the outbreak at 5pm after Otis calls Frank and mentions a guy hiding inside a Cosmetics Shop in the Entrance Plaza from someone taking shots at him, starting the ‘Mark of the Sniper‘ Scoop.
This Scoop will expire at midnight, so you have some wiggle room to hold it off. So, we suggest tackling the Main Story Scoop ‘Girl Hunting’ first and returning to this one later. After doing that, head to the Entrance Plaza to trigger a cutscene with the Hall Family zooming in on Frank with their rifle, kicking off the boss battle.
There will be one Survivor held hostage by the Hall Family, so you may have to rescue some Survivors around the mall before this Scoop becomes available. If Otis doesn’t call you about this Scoop at 5pm, that’s likely the reason.
How To Defeat The Hall Family
Before you dive head first into this Psychopath encounter, there are some things you must grab first, as they will be crucial to your success. First, head to Paradise Plaza and grab the Katana, Submachine Gun, and three things of Orange Juice.
The Submachine Gun is hidden away atop the awning above the Shoekin’s shop, and the Katana is found on another Awning just below Colombian Roastmasters, where you can also grab the Orange Juice. With these in your inventory, we also suggest heading to the Al Fresca Plaza and snagging a second Submachine Gun from the fountain.
The Hall Family's Moves
So, we came into this encounter a bit ill-prepared and had to use guerilla tactics to emerge victorious, but you won’t have to rely on that too much if you came prepared with the arsenal of goodies we listed above. The good news is they don’t have any special abilities or tricks; their skill just varies when it comes to landing a shot.
Thomas is the worst shot of the group, with Roger being the best and Jack being in the middle, so it’s crucial to go after either Thomas or Roger first. If you’re prepared with healing items, Submachine Guns, and a Katana, we strongly recommend singling Roger out first.
If not, we recommend trying to defeat Thomas as fast as possible and using his rifle to out-snipe one of the others, then grabbing their rifle and repeating the process for the final one. This is much harder, so please come prepared for this encounter.
With Roger out of the picture, this encounter becomes relatively trivial, as you can focus on Jack without worrying much about Thomas at all. Closing the gap on them will have them try and create distance, so rushing down Jack will essentially allow you to avoid taking damage and defeat him with several Katana slashes.
Just keep moving and rolling to evade most of the fire and stay to your primary target to keep them from firing. Rinse and repeat this strategy for the remaining members of the Hall Family, and you will have them defeated in no time!
Rewards For Defeating The Hall Family
Unlike some of the other Psychopath encounters in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, there are no permanent rewards for defeating the Hall Family. However, you will be able to pick up their Rifles and use them until they run out of ammunition. If you like this weapon, you can also obtain it in the Huntin’ Shack in the North Plaza.
Additionally, you can rescue Wayne Blackwell from Estelle’s Fine-Lady Cosmetics shop after defeating them and lead him back to the Security Room for a decent amount of PP. We recommend leading him back as soon as possible, as it can open up other Psychopath Scoops for the second day of the outbreak!
Rodger, Jack, and Thomas count toward the ten Psychopaths you need to eliminate to obtain the ‘Punisher’ Trophy/Achievement. So we strongly urge you to seek them out and defeat them if you’re gunning for it!
