Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Cait Sith Combat Guide

Here’s everything you need to know about battling it out as Cait Sith in FFVII Rebirth.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Cait Sith Combat Guide

Cait Sith holds some fun records in the Final Fantasy series. Not only is his name constantly mispronounced in English, but he is also commonly ranked lowest in terms of Final Fantasy 7 companions. This puts him in a difficult place to work, but in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth he is a genuine joy to play as, luck-of-the-draw as he is.

As was the case in the original, Cait Sith is technically two characters in one, and that is made much more literal in Rebirth with both he and his Moogle able to operate independently. Of course, it wouldn't be Cait Sith without some literal randomness too. That can be a lot to wrap your head around so read on to get a better explanation of how he functions.

Updated April 16, 2024 by Hilton Webster: While Cait Sith may be one of the more…disliked characters in the Final Fantasy series, there's no denying the odd joy in playing as them. Paired with animatronic Moogle and Cat, what you get out of them is equal parts skill and luck, though our guide should definitely push you towards the skill side.

Combat Overview

Battle Basics

Though every character in Rebirth plays quite differently from one another, they all share the common basic actions.

Square (Single Press)

This has Cait Sith perform a series of rapid swings with his Megaphone.

Square (Holding Down)

This has Cait Sith jump into the air and blow into their Megaphone, creating an area-of-effect attack. This can be held indefinitely.

Square (Single Press After Dodge)

This has Cait Sith fire off homing musical notes from his Megaphone similar to Cloud's dodging attack.

Triangle (Single Press)

This performs Cait Sith's default Special Attack, Kitty Wallop, which has him jump into the air and attack the enemy for moderate damage.

Triangle also changes to Mount after the Moogle has been summoned.

Cait Sith is quite a fast character, but also very small. This makes it quite easy for them to be evasive, dodging large attacks with ease, while simultaneously making them easy to lose in the middle of a battle. It's important to keep track of their position in battle so you can see which enemies are targetting them.

Cait Sith is not able to perform any airborne attacks, though their tracking musical notes can hit aerial enemies, giving them some offense against flying enemies. This is a limited compromise however, and Cait Sith is much more effective against enemies on the ground.

Unlike most other characters, Cait Sith does not excel through their actual moveset but through Luck. Many of their attacks are relatively weak and they don't have default ways to boost their magical or physical power like Aerith or Tifa. That is why summoning the Moogle is so essential as they open up Cait Sith's capabilities immensely.

Luck , in this regard, refers to the in-game stat which boosts the success rate of many of Cait Sith's attacks .

The Moogle also deals much more physical damage and can, in a way, act as a decoy for Cait Sith.

Limit Breaks

Cait Sith initially has access to three Limit Breaks, the third acquired from the end of his folio.

Magic Mogbox

Cait Sith whips out a box filled with a mysterious effect and lobs it at the enemy. The resulting effect is random.

Mega Magic Mogbox

Cait Sith unveils an even larger box with a more powerful effect and throws it at the enemies. The result is still random.

Giga Magic Mogbox

Cait Sith reveals an inconceivably large box filled with mysteries that reduce your enemies to dust. As you might expect, the result is indeed random.

The Moogle And Chance-Base Moves, Explained

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Cait Sith Combat Guide

The Moogle

The primary gimmick of Cait Sith's character is the Moogle. Without them, Cait Sith is extremely limited in their capabilities, restricted to a bare few abilities and their physical attacks. They can be summoned through the Let's Ride ability, which takes a single ATB bar. Cait Sith will be riding the Moogle by default.

The Moogle operates quite differently from Cait Sith himself, so it's essential to remember the differences in their movesets. Remember that the Moogle can only be manually controlled while mounted. Their health bar also appears beside Cait Sith's during gameplay as a circle.

Square (Single Press)

The Moogle can walk freely while pressing Square, while Cait Sith fires off ranged musical notes from his Megaphone.

Square (Holding Down)

This has the Moogle dash at the enemy and unleash a series of powerful physical attacks. It is also an effective means of closing the gap as the Moogle will roll towards the enemy with incredible speed.

Triangle (Single Press)

This has the Moogle perform their own unique Special Move, which grows while they fight independently of Cait Sith. At the first default tier, it is a dropkick.

You cannot dodge while on the Moogle as this will instead cause Cait Sith to jump off the Moogle.

As you can see, the Moogle is much more capable in a physical battle than Cait Sith, and even has their own Special Attack. This grows as the Moogle fights while unmounted. Though it starts as Dropkick, it grows by up to two more tiers, randomly assigning powerful buffs or attacks when activated.

At the second tier, the Moogle's Special Attack will bestow a random buff on the party. At the third tier, it will perform a powerful debilitating attack on the enemy. Attacking the same enemy as the Moogle while playing as Cait Sith will cause its Special Attack bar to fill more quickly.

Luck-Based Abilities

In Rebirth, Luck is used to increase the chances of a critical hit and the success of commands like Steal. However, it is also essential to Cait Sith's moveset as higher Luck will grant a higher chance of a beneficial outcome with his moves.

For example, Cait Sith has a move called Fortune Telling. This is a physical attack whose damage is completely random. Having higher Luck, however, will guarantee that higher damage occurs. In many ways, you can view Luck as a damage modifier for Cait Sith.

Further on this, many Skill Cores in his Folios and Weapon Skills increase Cait Sith's Luck while riding the Moogle. Therefore you'll want to always be riding the Moogle if you want Luck on your side.

Cait Sith's Weapons

Even though Cait Sith is added to the party relatively late into the game and already comes with two weapons, he can still acquire the same number of seven weapons as all other party members.

Cait Sith's Synergy Skills And Abilities

New to Rebirth are Synergy Skills and Abilities. These moves, performed in duos with other party members, serve the thematic purpose of building bonds between characters. In gameplay, they allow much greater depth and variation between characters.

Despite sounding so alike, Synergy Skills and Abilities are not interchangeable. Synergy Skills are free to use at all times , and fill the ATB gauge when used.

Synergy Skills can only be used after both characters have earned enough Synergy Bits through the use of regular Abilities.
