Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is hosting a new event that features a summon of Tidus with Yuna, but fans aren't happy about how Final Fantasy 10's protagonist is being portrayed with a light skin tone.
Even though Square Enix doesn't talk about it as much as it does Final Fantasy 7 and 14, Final Fantasy 10 stands as one of the most beloved entries in a series that's full of critically acclaimed releases. One of the main reasons that 10 has remained so popular over the years is because of its protagonist, Tidus, who stands tall as a fan-favourite.
Despite how much Final Fantasy fans love Tidus and the series' 10th entry, it's fair to say that they've been dealt a bit of a rough hand. Not as bad as Final Fantasy 8 lovers, mind you, but the botched remasters that changed everyone's facial expressions and the lack of much mainline representation certainly doesn't put it in the best position. Worst than all of that is what Square has slowly been doing to Tidus' appearance.
Final Fantasy Fans Think Tidus Is Too Light-Skinned In Brave Exvius
When Tidus was first introduced in Final Fantasy 10, he was shown to have tanned skin and sunbleached hair that was befitting of the game's setting. Over time, though, Tidus has slowly been made paler and paler by Square Enix, with no real obvious reason as to why. We can see this in games like Dissidia and even in the infamous Final Fantasy 10 remasters.
Well, if you thought that Tidus was looking a little too pale in those games, then you won't like what's been doing to him in Brave Exvius. As highlighted by the official Japanese Twitter account, a new Tidus and Yuna summon is being made available in Brave Exvius soon as part of an event, which features a new animation of the pair spinning in each other's arms.
For anyone wondering, it's Tee-dus, not Tie-dus.
Final Fantasy 10 showing up anywhere should be cause for celebration, but fans certainly aren't celebrating. As pointed out on the Final Fantasy subreddit, Tidus has been made incredibly light-skinned in Brave Exvius, even more so than in Dissidia or the remaster. It's not clear why it's been done, but Tidus' other appearances in the game have been much the same.
Redditor EGG said it the best, "They literally make him whiter with each iteration, when he obviously had golden brown skin originally. We've all played the game! We've seen the original cutscenes, we know what he was supposed to look like!!". The reaction is much the same on Twitter, where other Final Fantasy 10 fans have lamented what's happened to their favourite laughing boy.
I'd love to end on a positive note and hope that in the future things are changed around a bit, but Tidus' tan has been washed away for a long time now, so it seems likely that it's just going to keep on going. At least Final Fantasy fans have been outspoken about it and reacted accordingly.
