Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess — How To Defeat Kagokaburi

All of the monsters, the Seethe as they're known in Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess, feature fantastic designs inspired by Japanese mythology. From deeply unsettling to frankly absurd, they're all a work of art. A twisted, stomach-churning piece, but an unsettling beauty all the same.

Then there's the mysterious Kagokaburi. You may not have even heard of them, and perhaps only seen them through their Ema plaque. Well, we're going to help you find this elusive enemy, purge them, and gather up their oh-so-very helpful drops.

The Kagokaburi Ema Plaque is found by completing repairs in Narusawa Wind Caves, though the actual enemy can be encountered long before this.

What Is Kagokaburi?

Before finding Kagokaburi, it's helpful to know what they actually are. You are guaranteed to encounter every type of Seethe across the course of the game. Every Seethe that wants to fight you, anyway. Kagokaburi is decidedly docile in that regard, wanting just to scurry about the battlefield and keep their treasure safe.

As their Ema Plaque describes them, the Kagokaburi was once a young boy who stole countless riches from their lord's manor and was executed as punishment. A bit of a grim tale, though explains why they're quite so elusive when you try to catch them yourself.

In-game, they appear as a giant storage box from the top, though with gangly legs and arms sprouting from it, and a large mouth on the underside to gather up any Crystals it encounters. When it's just resting, you'd have no way of knowing it's not just a piece of the environment.

Finding Kagokaburi

Finding Kagokaburi is not so simple a process, unfortunately. They're something of a loot enemy, a rare spawn that offers great rewards. As such, that does mean you can't expect them to appear very often, but you can at least know them when they do appear.

Despite Kagokaburi being focused on stealing Crystals, they will thankfully not actually steal the ones dropped by enemies or in your own inventory.

They don't seem to have a guaranteed first location to spawn, either, or if you'll even get their introductory cutscene. Some players report they appear around Adashino Village, others in Moegi Ridge, and in some instances don't even appear until the story is completed. Once you've seen them once though, they can spawn in any level.

First off, Kagokaburi, like every other enemy, will appear from the corrupted Torii gates around the map. They're most likely to come from the large Torii gate, though they can also appear from the smaller gates as well.

Fighting Kagokaburi

As mentioned earlier, they don't attempt to fight you. Instead, they will start sprinting away the second you attack them. Important to bear in mind is that you cannot possibly run as fast as them, so you have to keep a eye on them so you don't lose track of them.

You can more easily track Kagokaburi on the map as they will appear with a treasure symbol , rather than the typical Seethe symbol.

When Kagokaburi runs from you, they will eventually stop and rest in place, trying to disguise themselves as a simple treasure chest, albeit a very large one. Try to hit them with your hardest attacks here as they will run again as soon as they're hit.

Kagokaburi also has no visible health bar but they have significantly more health than other Seethe without health bars, so don't think they'll go down in just a few hits.

Kagokaburi will run when you attack them, though if you don't catch up with them after too long, they will simply run out of the stage , taking their precious treasure with them.

What Does Kagokaburi Drop?

Kagokaburi is such a rare spawn, you would expect quite a good reward, right? Well, it's mostly a good reward, at least the first time.

The first time you defeat Kagokaburi, you'll unlock the Rags To Riches achievement/trophy, and potentially The Little Giant as well, which requires defeating every type of Seethe, if you beat them post-game.

When you battle them in a level, they will drop Crystals each time you hit them and will drop the rather significant amount of 1000 Crystals once defeated. This is a pretty nice boost if you're low on Crystals and want to top up, though it doesn't offer much incentive if you're already overloaded with them.

That's all there is to Kagokaburi. They're a nice bonus when they do appear, especially for the achievements and trophies, though are far from essential. Good luck in your hunt!
