Monster Hunter Stories invites you to a world where you get to befriend monsters and take a refreshing turn from the usual hunting grounds. The game is all about building trust, hatching more monster eggs, and adventuring alongside your already loyal Monsties, but it also allows you to use weapons in your hunt for more.
While your Monsties are undeniably awesome, having the right weapon for the job can make a difference in both hunting and battles. Weapons come in three different kinds: slash, blunt, and pierce with different elemental attack types, each offering unique benefits depending on the weapon type you choose. The following are the best weapons you can use in your quest around the game.
7 Fatalis Blade
The Fatalis Blade is a powerful dark sword obtained from Dark Demise or Fatalis. This weapon delivers heavy single-target damage through the Dragon Slash charged attacks, and deals bonus damage to monsters that are weak to the element, such as Elder Dragons.
When using this weapon, you should focus on hitting a monster's weak points for maximum damage, and utilize your Monstie to mount the monster while creating openings for powerful charged attacks. The weapon is ideal if you prefer a more hands-on approach to combat in the game due to its high damage output.
6 Daora’s Decimator
This is one of the weapons in the game that specializes in elemental damage. It is a powerful ice sword that you can get from the Elder Dragon, Kushala Daora. Its signature attack is the Ice Slash, which is especially effective in exploiting foes weak to the element, such as large Wyverns and some Bipedal monsters.
The weapon has the ability to apply the Freeze effect, which effectively slows a monster's movement and attacking power. Keep in mind, however, that the ice damage it inflicts will be less potent to monsters that have resistance to the ice element.
Consider using a Monstie with support skills that can buff your attack or debuff the monster's defense to further enhance the effectiveness of the Daora's Decimator.
5 Golden Falchion
To get this weapon, you first need to have the Blazing Falchion, after which you can upgrade it to become the Golden Falchion. The weapon boasts a high base attack power and a bonus to attack when paired with a Rathalos or its subspecies (Azure Rathalos and Silver Rathalos), Monstie.
The weapon has a Fire element, dealing bonus damage to monsters weak to the element, such as Lagombi or Zinogre. In addition to this, it has a special perk where you get the bonus in attack even if your Monstie is not actively participating in the fight.
4 Teostra Cratermakr
This weapon can be obtained from the Elder Dragon, Teostra, and it is known for its exceptional Blast element damage. Its signature attack is the Wyvernblast, which unleashes a concentrated blast that deals heavy damage and has a high chance of inflicting the Blastblight status.
Blastblight is an explosive effect that can deal extra damage over time, making the weapon useful in longer encounters and for strategic control in battle. The Teostra Cratermakr’s high raw damage is improved from fully charged swings and, so, as with all types of hammers, positioning and timing is key to ensuring you hit the most vulnerable parts of the monster.
3 Odyssey Blade
The Odyssey Blade is one of the best water-element weapons in the game. While it does not have a high base attack, it boasts a solid element modifier with its signature attack, Aqua Stream. It delivers a consistent stream of water-infused slashes, making it effective against Fire-weak monsters and inflicting decent damage overall.
The weapon also has a special effect that increases your water resistance for three turns, making it an effective weapon, particularly for players who prefer a more reserved playstyle, primarily offering support in battles. You can pair the Blade with water-based Monsties such as Lagiacrus or Royal Ludroth to create a better support buff.
2 Great Demon Rod
The Great Demon Rod is a powerful electric sword obtained from the ferocious Rajang towards the endgame. It boasts the highest base attack of all greatswords in the game with its signature attack, the Thunderous Smash. While raw power is its calling card, the Great Demon Rod also offers a hidden perk which gives an attack bonus when paired with a Rajang Monstie.
To craft it, you need to gather materials from high-level monsters and resources such as monster parts, high-quality ore, and specific quest rewards. This weapon offers very high raw damage, and has the ability to deliver heavy charged attacks, but it is relatively slower, which is something you should consider depending on your playstyle.
Prioritize using the Great Demon Rod against monsters weak to the Thunder element to deal the most damage.
1 Decapitator
This is one of the Greatsword weapons you will come across early on in the game, and it is crafted from the wings of a Yian Kut-Ku. It features the Flame Slash as its signature attack, which deals fire element damage to enemies.
Even though it has a relatively lower damage level compared to other greatswords, it has a higher critical hit chance, meaning you have a better chance of landing a critical blow. This is effective for dealing extra damage, especially if you are still learning the ropes.
