Red Dead Redemption 2: How To Skip Time

Don’t just let time pass you by. Speed it up!

Red Dead Redemption 2: How To Skip Time

Like many open-world games these days, Red Dead Redemption 2 has a day-and-night cycle. So, while roaming the Old West, you will see the time of day change. In fact, you can even check your pocket watch to see the time as it progresses.

You cannot stop it, though, as time keeps moving forward, like in real life. And this isn't Fallout, where you can wait on the spot, or Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain, where you can smoke the time away. However, there is still a way to skip forward several hours. Here's how you do it.

How To Advance Time

In Red Dead Redemption 2, you can advance in time by sleeping. To do so, go back to camp, head to your assigned bunk, and hold down the 'sleep' button.

Alternatively, if you're out in the wild, you can set up a small campsite. To do this, open up your item wheel, head to the 'item' tab, and select 'camp,' which is on the bottom segment of the wheel. Once you're kneeling at your camp, you'll see the option to sleep.

Whether you're sleeping at your standard camp or a little camp you made, you can choose what time of day you want to advance to. Your options are morning, noon, evening, or night. Next to each one, you can see how many hours the game will skip.

Time also moves forward while fast-traveling, but you can't choose exactly how much time passes.

Why Advance Time

The world in Red Dead Redemption 2 is meant to feel like a real place. As such, when it gets to nighttime, shops and other establishments until the morning. Therefore, one of the main reasons to advance time is when you're waiting for places to open.

However, shop openings aren't the only thing affected by time. There are specific interactions that only happen at a certain part of the day. For instance, if you want to meet the Saint-Denis vampire, it must be dark outside. Also, to do Henri Lemieux's missions, he usually wants you to meet him at night. Therefore, these are other reasons to change the time of day.
