«Master, I will listen to my heart and walk the path we believed in.»
One of Rise of the Ronin's most important yet rarely seen characters is Master Shoin. After all, he trained several Choshu clan members, including Kogoro Katsura and Shinsaku Takasugi. However, Shoin's most devoted student is arguably Genzui Kusaka, who takes it upon himself to carry on Shoin's vision for Japan's future. Shoin's words burn within Kusaka, filling him with a profound sense of justice.
Genzui's radical ideology and methods drive a wedge between several of Rise of the Ronin's characters. However, this tension shouldn't prevent you from getting to know the passionate former medical student from Choshu. Genzui Kusaka has some revealing sub-missions, and bonding with him will improve your strength and paired sword combat skills.
Where Can I Find Genzui Kusaka?
You can find Genzui Kusaka in the same locations as other Choshu clan members, such as Kogoro Katsura or Shinsaku Takasugi. His Chapter 1 hangout is the Sakura Inn in Bashamichi. You'll find him at the Choshu Clan Villa in Azabu during Chapter 2.
Genzui does not appear in Chapter 3, so you must visit him via the Testament of the Soul from that point on.

Can You Romance Genzui Kusaka?
One would assume that Genzui is not a romanceable character due to his marriage to Fumi Sugi. However, you can unlock his Favour Gauge later in the game. Still, even after filling his Favour Gauge, we did not get to form a Veiled Vow with Genzui during our playthrough of Rise of the Ronin's campaign.
Your ability to woo Genzui may depend on your choices in the game. Some characters, like Shinsaku Takasugi, will not form a Veiled Vow with you unless you meet other requirements in addition to filling the Favour Gauge. Genzui may be a similar case.
Regardless, earning Genzui's Favour unlocks unique cutscenes that give a great insight into his character. So, it's still worth the effort.
What Are Genzui Kusaka's Bond Bonuses?
