Use the best weapons for you and reap the rewards in Rise Of The Ronin!
Almost immediately upon starting Rise of the Ronin, you'll be confronted with a bunch of weapon types, each possessing their strengths and weaknesses. While variety is the spice of life, and it can be fun to experiment with each, the game encourages you to pick your favorites and stick with them. It accomplishes this through a system referred to as weapon proficiency.
As you continuously use your favorite weapon types, you'll earn rewards for your mastery, including skill points. This will give you yet another avenue to upgrade your character on your journey to create the perfect character build.
What Is Weapon Proficiency?
Weapon proficiency serves as a leveling system for your arsenal in Rise of the Ronin. Each weapon type will be leveled individually, so you need to stick with the ones you like best to reach their maximum potential, and as your proficiency increases, you'll acquire buffs, skill points, and even abilities.
Your progression can be viewed in the combat styles menu, and clicking the Right Stick will show you what level you are at with a weapon and what you receive for ranking up. The upgrades you receive are buffs to your attack strength, and every weapon (except for fists) learns the Violent Gale technique at proficiency level five.
How To Increase Weapon Proficiency
Weapon proficiency can be increased in several ways, and the most straightforward is to use the weapon type you like most and kill a lot of enemies. This nets you the highest amount of experience available and is the best method to quickly grind proficiency.
However, as you're taking on bandits in the open world, you may notice that your proficiency in unequipped weapon types is also increasing. This is because you gain additional proficiency in the weapon your opponents hold when you defeat them, preventing you from rendering other weapons useless to you as you advance through the game.
Thus, if you want to change your strategy or loadout late in the campaign, you won't be starting from square one.
While exploring Rise of the Ronin's world, you may encounter other Ronin who you can fight, and if you beat them, you'll gain a proficiency boost in the weapon that they had equipped . Be warned though, if you lose, you'll forfeit all your Karma with no opportunity to satisfy a Vendetta.
