Mitama are curious foes in Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance. They seem impervious to most all damage and do their absolute best not to be beaten. In many cases, this means they’ll escape from battle without doing much else.
This is because Mitama are this game’s equivalent of Dragon Quest’s Metal Slimes. When defeated, they will drop a boatload of EXP and have the potential to drop a lot of very valuable items, such as Grimoires, Gospels, and Glory Crystals. As a result, it's well worth learning how to deal with these frustrating yet rewarding enemies.
Updated June 17, 2024: We've updated this guide to reflect the changes made in the Vengeance version of the game.
Where To Find Mitama
A gold Mitama in Shin Megami Tensei 5
Mitamas are encountered in one of two ways, though both are very rare.
- They may appear in the field as enemies that you can start a battle with, perhaps even in groups of four. It's important to strike them with your sword so you get the jump on them and don't let them escape from battle before you even get a chance at killing them.
- They may also appear alongside other demons in normal battles. This should make them your top priority for that battle!
If you have any of the Mitama Dance DLCs , you can increase the appearance rate of certain Mitamas in the Options menu.
There are four varieties of Mitama, and they all drop different items.
- Ara Mitama are red and drop Grimoires. These let you level up your demons quickly.
- Kushi Mitama are black and drop Gospels. These let you level up your main character quickly.
- Nigi Mitama are blue and drop Glory Crystals. These give you a boost of Glory, the currency used to buy Miracles.
- Saki Mitama are gold and drop high-value Relics. These can be sold at the Cadaver's Hollow for lots of Macca.
How To Defeat Mitama

Defeating a Mitama is only made difficult by the fact that they have random weaknesses and will utterly block all other sources of damage. This means that you either have to get lucky when trying out an attack, or you have to get crafty.
Enter the Spyglass. This item can be bought from the Cadaver’s Hollow for 50 Macca and will reveal all of a target’s weaknesses and resistances. This item is absolutely worth the price when it comes to Mitama hunting. The only issue after that is having every element available to you.
There aren’t enough skill slots for your player character to be able to use attacks of every element while remaining useful for the rest of the game, so it’s best to split the elements over your party if you're going Mitama hunting.
You will likely have ample sources of Fire, Ice, Wind, and Electric attacks from the early crop of demons you can recruit, but Light and Darkness are a touch rarer. Luckily, though, there are easily obtained sources of these elements available early in the game.
- The Light-elemental Hama skill is known by Angels. This demon can be fused as early as level ten. Cheap fusion recipes for an Angel include: Onmoraki + Kodama, Onmoraki + Mandrake, and Mandrake + Pixie.
- The Darkness-elemental Mudo skill is known by Daemons. These can be easily recruited in a cave to the east of Hamamatsucho in Minato. Alternatively, they can be fused from level seven by combining a Mandrake and a Preta.
Alternatively, you could simply buy the elemental attack items from the Cadaver's Hollow for a small amount of Macca. That way, you can use your Spyglass with your first turn and then Pass each of your demons' turns to get back to your main character. Then you can use the elemental item of your choice, all in one round of combat!
